2" or 4"

Lookin to buy a new pistol. I'm decided on a taurus .357 as I can shoot 38 through it also.

http://taurususa.com/products/produc...egory=Revolver

Would you go with the 4" or the 2"? I dont shoot long distances maybe 30yds max so what would you recommend

If you're going to conceal-carry it, 2".

Otherwise, 4".

Then get the 4" No reason to have the 2 in unless you are trying to hide it.

I would shoot a 2" airweight with .357 before you buy one.

It is the only pistol that has ever left a mark on me, but it sure made me grin.

but yea, 4".

4" for sure - and don't shoot .38's through it. Do some research as to why.

Just a hint - it has to do with OAL.

.38's with a 125gr bullet will be at about 1.455"
.357's with a 125gr bullet will be about 1.590"

You can buy Cowboy action loads if you want less recoil of the .357 magnum.

Budd you're the first person I've ever seen say not to shoot 38 through a 357....

Are you saying just for that gun or for any 357?

It is not that you "can't" but arguments have been made that the shorter chambered .38 in a .357 revolver will cause increased wear to the throat and have pre-mature timing and subsequent barrel ware.

The cylinder of a revolver is not a straight threw shot in each chamber - but is tapered at the end to get it to line up with the throat/barrel. The .38 is short enough to not have a good "approach" and cause increased ware.

Just theory - but with handloads or buying CAS loads - why shoot the .38?

If it is for range time and lead is not allowed(CAS or HP's) - Uni-cor makes a full encapsulated FP that is indoor range friendly to load.

Only reason I have to shoot 38 is the cost reason. I dont have a problem with the recoil but 38 is just alot cheaper until i buy a reloader.

the increased wear will probably not be a factor as I shoot maybe 200 rounds per month out of it so its not like it is a comp pistol that you shoot 500 + a week

or just buy a RUGER,

shoot whatever you want,

and have the gun outlast like 3 generations of your family line....

my wife and i rent a gp100 4" barrel that probably has 30,000 rounds through it and it looks/works like its brand new.

now, granted, we didn't pull out our micrometer, but this thing was shooting 2" groups @ 25yards. thats good enough for me!!!!

here in cali, they go for about $550.00, but i would snap up a used one without a second thought.

I'd be in the same boat with the ruger and the gun would cost twice as much to begin with

With the taurus I can get it for about 300 less than most ruger revolvers and that 300 could buy me most of a dillon 550

yup, taurus is a bit cheaper. they seem to have pretty good quality though.

i cross-checked a bunch of different stores and all of them had sent back a handful of taurus's but none could really remember the last ruger they sent. and this was while i wasn't really looking for one.

that and the rental swayed me to ruger. (along with ergonomics, of course)

This would only apply if shooting .38 special "hot loads" not target grade loads. The amount of heat/cup generated on cheap 158gr SWC is nothing compared to .38+P+ or .357mag loads.

Can you get CAS loads cheaper than like the Winchester Target .38's at Wal-mart ? I think the last time I was there it was like $23 for 100 rounds.

Not that I know of. I think the CAS loads are around $15/50.

Handloads pay off huge for the .357 magnum.

Yeah I had been wantin to find a 4.3 vortec to go into my project im gonna be startin so when I found a wrecked 98 blazer 4x4 with a rebuilt engine and tranny for 500 bucks I had to jump on it. Figure this will get me my engine, tranny, wiring harness, steering column, sell the tcase for either a 208 or 300 and I'm gonna have the air cond. hooked up for winter wheelin

a 4.3 with the 4l60 is hard to find for under 800 and both of these are freshly rebuild with the receipt for both the gun will come at a later date just gonna get my willys started first
