Tonight one of my uncles showed me a little Jennings 22 pistol he picked up at a pawn shop recently for $100. Spare clip, still in the box, not a scratch on it, and I doubt it's even had a full clip through it.

It does. M1 garands use clips.

I would surmise that since you insert the entire enbloc clip into an M1 Garand it is not used to assist in loading "a detachable or fixed magazine" and hence not qualified the same as a stripper CLIP for say an AK or a stripper clip for 5.56mm.

Pistol = magazine.

Rifles can have built in or detachable magazines, that may be loaded with a stripper clip or bandolier. Like the Garand.

The only thing unique about the Garand is that the clip stays in the gun after it's been reloaded.
