Thoughts on a gun

Been shopping around for a good home defense gun, and came across a series of products I'd like.

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/prod...ducts_id=91580

with
http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/.../Mounting-Rail

to hold
http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/...ED-WeaponLight

firing
http://www.dakotaammo.net/products/glaser/glaser.htm

and maybe in the future upgrading to
http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/rowland.htm

I know it seems I'm cheaping out on the firearm, but I've heard good things about Springfield and can't seem to justify spending more on a Colt or Kimber...unless there's a pressing reason to do so. I'll just work more.

That rail mount is $150!?!? Why not just find a model with a built in rail?

because a $500 pistol with a $150 rail is still cheaper than a $1000 kimber warrior. What other 1911's have rails? I admit I haven't researched it much, obviously. If there's something better, sure. I'm looking at a 1911 because of the last link in the post.

How's that Federal ammo do in a close-quarters home situation? Wifey is worried about wall penetration, and I have immediate neighbors and an 8 year old.

Still thinking about an XD.

And thanks Doc.

Not exactly going to be dropping the thing into a bucket of mud with the chamber open...1911's have been around for so long for a reason. That and I just like them, Dad had a gov't issue one.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, I'm a big boy I can take it. But I've just fallen in love with 1911's, they've got heritage, personality, something a Glock doesn't have.

1911's are fine. Personally I prefer a shotgun for home defense, that way I'm not killing people three houses down from over-penetration.

that was the point of the ammo I posted. I'll buy regular ammo that isn't over $2 per round for around-town carry, but in the house with neighbors one rather thin wall away and a daughter sleeping on the same floor as me and in the room right next to the stairwell, the Glasers seem to be the way to go.

if i am not mistaken the hydra's were made for home protection. acording to my gun store... they are lower grains and quick exspansion to prevent "over" penetration into further rooms. someone correct me if i a wrong.

the glocks are 5-600 with the built in rail. i love my 21... it does not have the "majisty" a 1911 has but it sure as hell slings the meat down the hallway. it will prolly be dark anyway so the bad guy will not know if you are wielding a kimber or a high point.

Have you seen the difference between a Federal HST and a Federal Hydro-Shok once they're expanded? If you like Federal, why are you still carrying HS? They improved it. A LOT.

Yes. That's a quarter. (45 ACP, Ranger T on left, HST on right)

here is mine Joe

the 1911 is a good choice. I also have a XD45 and a remington 870 pump with a 18inch barrell and pistol grip. just depends what part of the house I am in when the intruder enters as to what he or she is shot with

If I had the financial option to have multiple choices, I'd go with that, but I'm looking for good all-around, something that looks neat at the range is another reason

Very nice Jeff, what all is done to it, if anything?

If you want a cheap 1911 w/ rail do this:

They can be had for under $650 at most shops, and even cheaper if you get one off gunbroker: Here

And for the love of god use some real ammo your trying to kill an intruder to protect your family. I'm with TNT and carry HST.

I have been carrying a 1911 for 25 years. Nothing at all wrong with them.

If you are looking at a plastic pistol, consider the XD. You can get a 4" .45ACP with two hicap mags, holster, mag carrier, and mag loader for under 500$

I have no idea where that comes from.

As for the "safety slug..." kind of oxymoronic isn't it?

Damn Pete, if I didn't already have one, I'd order one from you. That is way under every other dealer's price.

This is taken from another site. Here is a list of the best performers.

Quote:
Dr. Gary K. Roberts

.45 ACP:
Barnes XPB 185 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal HST 230 gr JHP (P45HST2)
Federal HST 230 gr +P JHP (P45HST1)
Federal Tactical 230 gr JHP (LE45T1)
Speer Gold Dot 230 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 230 gr JHP (RA45T)
Winchester Ranger-T 230 gr +P JHP (RA45TP)

Notes:
-- Obviously, clone loads using the same bullet at the same velocity work equally well (ie. Black Hills ammo using Gold Dot bullets, Corbon loads using Barnes XPB bullets, etc…)

-- Bullet designs like the Silver Tip, Hydra-Shok, and Black Talon were state of the art 10 or 15 years ago. Modern ammunition which has been designed for robust expansion against clothing and intermediate barriers is significantly superior to the older designs. The bullets in the Federal Classic and Hydrashok line are outperformed by other ATK products such as the Federal Tactical and HST, as well as the Speer Gold Dot; likewise Winchester Ranger Talons are far superior to the old Black Talons or civilian SXT's.
I have had good reliability with the Winchester Ranger T and Speer Gold Dot.

More info on 1911s.

Its an old 70 series colt my Dad carried for 15 years as a Brinks driver
when he retired it he ave it to me I had some upgrades done to it
Match Barrel and bushing
slide tightened
action job
Millet sights
adjustable trigger
mag funnel
combat hammer
beaver tail
lowerd ejection port
all new springs
he carried it in a leather holster so almost all the bluing was worn off so I had it dura coated
its got a stippled front and rear strap and new cocobolo grips
all the work was done at Spec OP's Shop in Hudson, Fl
I also have 10 wilson combat 8rd stainless mags, and the 2 OG colt 7rd mags.

Ive got a GI, its a fun shooter, but it needs some work to be a carry/HD gun. It needs better sights!!! I lose mine if I aim them at anything dark in color. The trigger is gritty, but it wares in. The GI mag is nice, but a more reliable mag like a wilson would be good to have
