Pig School

Question for the military medical people. Have any of you ever heard of "pig school".? A friend of mine has a son who just graduated class as a corpsman and he was telling about him having to "pig school" as part of his additional training.
Is this for real?

I've "heard" they now use pigs, older schools used to use goats and were called goat labs. The name "goat lab" has kinda stuck and is still often used even though pigs are supposedly used now...

Yes, it is commonly referred to as "goat lab". It is a requirement for 18D special forces medics. The idea is that they can use live animals to simulate trauma on humans that medics will see once they go to war. The rumor is that the final test in "goat lab" is keeping the animal alive for a set amount of time after it is subjected to significant trauma.

I can not confirm nor deny on a publicly read forum that can be searched by people like PETA and ALF who would like nothing better than to shut down any live tissue training I may or may not have or do a couple of times a year.

Where is he going for his next unit?

Yes, the military has some pig and goat farms around but they aren't advertised due to public opinion.

Instead of using pigs, why don't they use PETA and ALF type people? Other than the incessant whining, they'd make much better test subjects, being as how they're much closer to normal humans than pigs.

Just sayin'.

Where is he going for his next unit?

He said he had to go to Desert survivor class and /or mountain survival class. From there he is joining the 3 battalion, 9th Marines and headed to Afghanistan to a forward outpost?
He is a pretty good kid, started out in Buds training, but dropped out due to an injury. Says he is going to try again in a year.

Johns Hopkins has a pig lab for doctors. I had a good friend who was a tech in the lab, they put all the pigs to sleep after the doctors were done, never even woke them up.

She actually stole one of the pigs. It's still alive up on my brother's farm actually, it weighs about 800lbs lol

Yes we just did a live fire for our medics with pigs at NAS Fallon. Amazing training only thing better is working in a major city ED.
