Should I?
Guy on a local forum has a Rem 742 carbine in 30-06 with tasco scope. Wants $300, should I pick it up? I'm on the fence because I don't need it, but it seems like a deal. Could be used for trading at a later date maybe.

I have one and if it wasn't for sentimental value that fucker would be long gone. Accuracy is on the line for a hunting rifle for me and for some reason it doesn't cycle real well, has the same trigger group as a model 1100 (shitty for a rifle) but I have killed a bunch of deer with it.
Honestly I would much rather have a bolt gun. |

I just picked it up because it was cheap and can be used for trading later on. The finish on it is really good and it doesn't look like it has been shot very much.

Looked online some, seems $250 might have been too much. I had a 7400 which I guess was a later version. They only last 300-500 rounds or so.

From what I understand is the 742 has issues when it's cold outside - won't auto reload or jambs up. I doubt that its an issue with the newer 7400. I thought I heard someone talk about them years ago (not here) about some mod work that could be done to them for improvements but not sure.
I was told close to 20 years ago to stay away form them and just get the 760 pump. So I bought a 7600 carbine in 30-06 back then and have killed a shit load of Bambi's with it. Whoever says this gun is not accurate because of being a pump action and not a bolt or that being a carbine is full of absolute shit. I,m not discounting a bolt style accuracy have owned several and still do. I could tell you several kill stories to prove the 7600's accuracy, but I really don't care if anyone believes it or not - it kills for me and that's all that matters ![]() I wouldn't say you made a killer deal but an OK one pending it's actual condition too. I think they are a pretty cool looking style firearm and if I found one like that, I'd buy it too. |

Condition is what I would consider excellent for a gun of this age.
Meh, if nothing else, I will just keep it for a brush gun or pass it on to my boy when he gets to hunting age. I feel confident that I won't take a hit on it if I decide to sell.
