thought I'd do it the 'right way'
and it's not going to wrok.
I have a Winchester 1300 bird gun that I was going to convert to a defender style. found the defender 8 shot mag tube - traded a couple of rusty ak mags for it. took the whole thing apart and was all set to pull the mag tube (it's press fit) and I realized it wont work unless I get the defender barrel. the lug/ring is in a different place, so I can't put the mag cap back on as the mag is longer.. argh. I'd probably end up boogering up the throat tube pressing the mag tube out and back in anyway. |

I'm thinking either sell it and buy an aftermarket extension, or bootyfab up a piece of tubing to sleeve the mag tube from the end of the mag tube down to the barrel lug.
if this thing weren't free, I'd just get something else. all I have into it now is 3 of the 'rusty' ak mags. |

From what I read that temp gets things a dull cherry red based on articles ive read about permatly attaching comp/brakes on AR barrels for states (like mine) that still have post ban AR laws.

propane yes but it will take a while like a long while if you got the benzo torch head i think you can just screw a mapp gass cylinder right on to it. here is some info on mapp vs pro Mapp Gas Mapp gas is made from combining liquefied petroleum and Methylacetylene-Propadine. It can be used for heating, brazing, metalizing, soldering, flame hardening and cutting. Mapp gas produces a flame temperature of 5301° F (2927° C) and 2405 Btus. Making it a good choice when a hotter flame is neded for example breaking a rust bond on a pipe or a large plumbing repair that is at leat 2”. Propane Propane is made from refining crude petroleum and natural gas. It does not burn as hot as mapp gas making it a better choice for1/2” and 3/4” plumbing. Propane is often the choice for the homeowner or do-it-yourselfer because it works well for small jobs and is significantly cheaper than map gas.

"gun solder" melts at a fairly low temp. This stuff melts at 430:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct...tnumber=813132 Lots of double rifles and double shotguns have the barrels soldered to the middle rib. Last edited by Napoleon047; 02-03-2009 at 04:38 PM. |

Sounds like the only reasonable answer to me. If it was a Mossburg that you couldn't put an extension then I could see going to all the trouble but not if there is such a simple solution already out there.

I was reading the Hiking/pack rifle thread and quickly looked up the AR-7. I found this site by total chance. Pretty good price on the defender barrel, even with night sights. I was considering this option with my 1300, but I still shoot trap from time to time.
Defender barrel

I found that also. I'm thinking I'm going to sell the defender mag for about what mag tube extension will cost. a few mins with a chop saw, a file, and some emery cloth, and Im golden.
