private training
What's the general feeling on private CQB training?
My official firearms training involves the NRA Basic Pistol class. I'm yet to pick up my carry pistol and I can't apply for my CCW until after I get moved into my new house. However, this CQ survival course is being offered when I may be able to take it. Is this something at I would benefit from as a noob, or should I wait for a while and get some range time under my belt? Would that just give me time to develop bad habits? Are there better courses? Is this jumping into college level stuff when I should be in Jr. High? not that it matters, but one of the guys teaching this course taught my Basic Pistol course. |

I talked to these guys http://coloradoinvestigativeservice.com/ yesterday, i think i am going to use them for my CCW, they seemed like they were pretty good and came recommended, they have classes similar to the one you are talking about.

All training is good training.
When you say private, are you saying one-on-one, or enrolling in a place like "Gunsight Academy"? I would love to spend a few days at some of the shoot schools. The biggest thing you will probably get out of a CQB course is point shooting, weapons retention, and how to move/shoot around cover. Depends on the course and instructor.

I've heard good things about the Magpul Carbine I and Pistol I classes for beginners. You need to have a basic grasp of the weapons used and how to clear malfunctions, etc... But they are to teach the basics of how to streamline your actions and make you more effective in returning fire/shooting around cover/CQB. The Carbine II and Pistol II classes are more advanced, and are for after you've gone through some lower level classes. EAG is another good company, Pat Rogers runs it. Then there's Thunder Ranch (Clint Smith IIRC) classes to consider too. Frontsight is run by a nut from what I remember, search their name here, it's been discussed.

If you wanted to work on getting something together in the Mississippi area, I am sure I could come up with a few more people that would be interested in attending.

This thread has made me aware of one thing. Even amateurs can charge professional prices for classes. The guy may be a great teacher. He may be able to deliver information like nobody else. Personally, if I'm going to pay that kind of money then I'd expect top notch instruction from a top notch shooter. I would want the instructor to be hands above my current abilities. I would look into a teacher's credentials prior to forking out money.

Also look at what they are teaching and what their experience is.
You wouldn't go to a cowboy action competition shooter for CQB, and vice versa. There are plenty of people willing to instruct out there. I have been fortunate that I shoot with some guys that have high level instruction, and couple are professional instructors. They have really improved my over all gun handling/shooting ability. On that same note, they have often analyzed what I do shooting and hunting, and put it into their instruction. We hunt and shoot together several times a year. I am not a world class shooter, but as one guy told me "Even the dumbest guy on the job can teach you something". I know when I am being taught what will work for me, and what won't. A good instructor will usually go through several techniques and once he finds out what works for you, will set up drills to practice that technique. The first you need to learn is the technique. Once you have that, then you must have a timer to really see what is going on. Sometimes you may feel fast, and you are not. A fast run is one that is effortless and smooth.

Google the "Lethal Force Institute". Massad Ayoob is probably the top authority in the country on conceiled carry, self defense training, And justifyable shootings. He travels around the country giving classes and seminars.
