Trap
I'm getting back into shooting trap. I haven't shot in close to 20 years. I'm looking for a decent entry level gun. I don't want to break the bank.
What say the PBB?

870 Express
![]() Check out THR and shotgunworld bbs, there are alot of good answers/reviews there. Make some buddies and try theirs. I know it's been said a million times but you need to find one that fits you and your style.

You will hit well with any gun that fits.
I've shot a Ruger red labels with over $1000 of custom work. I didn't hit well because it didn't fit me. I shot a $125 Mossberg 500 with the recoil pad taken off for quite a few years. I hit quite a bit, shot many grouse, rabbits, etc. because that gun fit. My personal favorite shotgun is a Browning Auto-Double. It is a side by side that fit me like no other I have ever shot. It is light in the front, swings good, points perfectly, and I hit without effort. I just wish I could convince my friend to sell it to me.

I shoot an 1100, but for the budget I'd go with the 870. These are what fit me though........

I'd like to spend less than a G.
I've got an 1100 but it has a 28" barrel with a fixed choke and I won't touch it for sentimental reasons. I was thinking a 870 wingmaster but I haven't picked one up for sometime to see how it feels.

One of these days I'll finally get off my cheap horse and buy one (if I can find one). Either that, or knock my friend in the head and take his

I'd recommend an auto or a double gun. I have shot sporting clays with a pump, but only because that's what I was hunting with at the time. If you want to be competitive, a pump will be a big hinderance. Also, in theory an over and under is faster than a SxS because the first shot (bottom barrel) directs the recoil close to straight back (less muzzle rise). YMMV.
Do you want to shoot skeet, trap, or sporting clays?

If that's your budget I'd look for a used 870 Classic Trap, Citori, or Bt-99. For less then a grand you've got the optoin of getting a trap specific gun. While the Wingmaster is nice, it's not trap specific. Course with a grand budget you could get a Wingmaster and do some upgrades. I've never understood auto's for trap shooting. You shoot once and then wait, unless you're playing a game.

Personally, I would go to a trap range and talk to shooters. I would ask about what they are shooting and if they minded if you handled their shotgun. I would suspect that some wouldn't mind you shooting a round with thier gun if you buy the ammo.
They can probably tell you some of the guys they know with guns for sale.

I'd go for a used Browning Citori for just under a grand for an O/U. I really like my 1187 though, its normally what I end up using at the skeet/trap range cause I'm a pussy

Id check out the clubhouse/office at the range and see whats on the for sale board. Ours has tons of nice guns for pretty fair prices.
Ive shot sporting with a 870 and now my O/U, Ive used the 870 for years but since I put the new stock on it it never fit me right. Shot a 75/100 first time out with the ($150) O/U, which is ~10 better than I normally do. I shot a friends $2k+ citori a week later and was back on par with the 870. Try some out before you buy, you might be surprised what fits you.

Update: I bought a really nice 1100 Trap used off a guy at the club for $650. I took it out for the second time last night and shot a 93. I'm pretty pleased with it.

You need to teach me how to shoot trap.
I have shot it a few times and am no good. Skeet I might get close to 20 on occasion, but its been years since I have shot skeet.
