Question on Hunting rifle

I wanted to see what ya all thought about the Weatherby vanguard 308. I want to get back into hunting since i have hooked up with some decent and fun people. Mostly looking to put down a big Colorado elk. Here is a pic of the same one that i am looking at my local gun shop for $800. Or would you suggest something else..

The only other one that i liked from all those that i was handling was the new Remington VTR..

I looked at those and the stock seemed that it was more of a temporary one, and that i would be wanting to get a upgraded stock pretty quickly. The stats on the shots looked good though, and yea i would save a few hundred.

Since you won't save any weight with the 308 over 30-06 in that model, I'd go 06 and 180 gr slugs for elk. If you go with a 308, I would try a 165gr bonded cup and core, like remington core-lokt ultra bonded or Nosler Accubond.

I have a Howa 1500 and my son has a Vanguard in 06, both shoot great.

IIRC it is a Mossberg 1500. It was originally a S&W 1500 made by Howa. After mossberg dropped it, they sold as a Howa 1500.
I've hunted with one since I was 15. Started as a 243, rebarrelled in '95 in 7mm-08.
The action is exceptionally strong, and slightly heavy at the receiver. Mine was exceptionally accurate in 243, but the custom 7mm-08 is picky about bullets and case length.

Mine also needed trigger work out of the box. Some polishing and it is a very nice trigger.
Here is mine. The Bell Carleson stock may very well be serial #001

That was back when carbon fiber was brand new (1985-86)

The trigger is adjustable on the newer models, my I had to tinker with the factory trigger on my circa 1985 1500 to get it 3-4LB's and still have a functional safety.

The howa is a very good rifle(weatherby vanguard). They are moderatly priced. You may want to consider a savage in a 300 WSM or something like that. The 308 is enough as long as you are not taking very long shots and you are using a premium bullet. The o6 is about 150fps faster than a 308. Both good accurate cartridge.
Shot placement is the most important thing. Practice, practice practice.

Alot depends on the budget. I am not a fan of any of the NEW remingtons, as they have completly forgot about quality. The older ones, however are great. You would be surprised at what you could pick up a Winchester black shadow for, maybe in the $400 range. They are a pushfeed action, very similar to a remington and both seem to shoot well.
Just my opinions,
JM

Well then maybe Howa is who i should have a beef with.

i would say you can get a damn nice Tikka (made by Beretta) for that scratch and have some left over. plus its a removable magazine, which i like. So its got that going for it, which is nice...

Just looked up the Tikka, looks nice and the Tikka T3 Tactical is a sexy looking weapon but i can't see dropping 1400 on a rifle..

Tikka is a nice rifle, very accurate out of the box ( I think they have a 1" MOA guarantee ), basic model should be ~$500. I'm not a fan of the plastic removable magazine, more shit to loose/forget.

I have a vanguard in .270 as my primary deer rifle and like it alot. It is very accurate (but only with 150's) and pretty old so I have no idea about the howa thing. Fancy wood stock etc.
I would go .06 for a primary elk rifle.

Why would the plastic magazine get loose? I have the same magazine in my remington 788 as was there when my dad bought it in the 70s, and I haven't loosed it yet

I have a Tikka T3 Lite and I love it... it is chambered in .300WSM

Edit: I payed ~350 for my Tikka from Sportsmans Warehouse almost 2 years ago. That and my Leupold VX3 scope put at about $1k
