"Wild Man of Cataloochee" dies...
Bit of local legend. This guy was the ultimate survivor!
Here is the link to the story...
Wild Man of Catalooche
Little back ground... Before the feds took land for the Great Smokies, this man was raised in the community of White Oak and Cataloochee. His family were "neighbors" to my great grandparents before a lot of the land was taken. According to my grandad, Arley's mom was commited when Arley and his brother were early teens. My dad remembers them from visits to my great grandparents. The 2 boys were a bit off as well. When they came to take them, Arley escaped and has been a recluse since. Few members of the community knew him and their were only very few he would not run from.
He was the ultimate outdoor survivalist! People started leaving food for him later on. We used to camp on the lower end of Cataloochee ( backwoods campsight) and my grandmother and grandad would leave out a plate for him and it would be gone in the morning.
