Obey 'The Laws of The Land'
Wellllllllllllllllllllll I knew this place looked sketchy every time I drove by so decided not to stop
![]() There was always a "WE BUY/SELL/TRADE FIREARMS" sign out by the road and the gunshop is run out of what appears to have once been his garage. Don't help people with straw purchases, dumbasses... the penalties are steep and the felon might actually be a fed ![]() http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/82715927.html Gun Shop Raided, Owner In Federal Custody A Norfolk gun dealer is in federal custody facing felony charges after Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and State Police raided his State Route 420 business. Police and federal agents raided Straight Shooters gun shop and charged the owner, 50 year old Richard Oakes, with falsifying business records. Sources close to the investigation tell 7 News Oakes allegedly wasn't filling out proper paperwork involving gun sales and purchases. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Oakes willfully failed to record the identity of a firearms purchaser in his records as required by law. The complaint alleges that Oakes sold a Colt CAR-A3, .223 caliber semiautomatic rifle to an undercover state police investigator on December 16, 2009 as part of a "straw purchase" wherein the firearm was actually paid for and received by a person prohibited by law from doing so. The felony offense carries a maximum possible sentence of up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, a special assessment of $100, and a term of supervised release. Police say another arrest is pending as part of the investigation. |

they had some stings going on in my area a few years ago...guy would come in and want to sell his gun, then in the course of chit chat, he would say it "may" be stolen...idiot, I KNEW it was a sting by the way the guy acted...I passed on it every time...dicks alwyas used the SAME Beretta 92F...
undercover cops, plainscothes ATF, etc...would come in wanting to sell a gun...I would always ask what they hoped to get for it...if the price was way low, something was usually up...most of the time I would note the info and pass and recommend another local dealer(who was known to lie to ATF about other dealers to make bonus points) as a place to try to sell. Once two came in and one wanted to buy a gun and let the other guy fill out the paperwork...I passed...LOL...I striaght up asked the guy to see his badge and laughed at him when he said, I am no cop...sure you are a BATF idiot. two weeks later, BATFE came in and looked over my records, no issues and they left me alone after that.

nope...but a friend($$) and I are working on opening one here in town as we are getting so many requests for class III items, we are going nuts...seems DFW dealers are gouging everyone and they are coming up here to find better prices.
I will be looking at a local building(room to shoot in) as long as it is not ice/snow Friday. EDIT...I held 01-07 ffl for 28 years, so I have probably seen it all as far as guns and atf bullshit goes.

hey hey guys let's not turn this into a shit-chat post remember
![]() I like the original 'tech' posted... Anyone know how often the ATF does these stings or is it just on places that they hear bad stuff about? Good to know that you made it through the process without a hitch because you aren't a scumbag ![]() People like this guy that got arrested are really not helping the situation with regards to legislation. The law that he broke is one that should be very easy to understand, follow through with, and respect if only out of common sense. |

Here is some more info from today about the situation. This guy is straight up dumb ![]() A Massena firearms dealer is accused of hiding the identity of a gun purchaser by selling to a third party. Federal authorities charge 50 year old Richard M. Oakes with willfully failing to record the identity of a gun purchaser in his records. A conviction could draw Oakes up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Prosecutors say Oakes, owner of Straight Shooters, sold a .223 caliber semiautomatic Colt rifle to an undercover State Police investigator on December 16th. They called the transaction a "straw purchase," meaning the investigator posed as buying the weapon for someone else, a person prohibited by law from purchasing the firearm. A federal search warrant was also executed at Oakes' business today. The press release from federal authorities doesn't say what they found. The criminal complaint against Oakes, obtained by MyABC50.com details the "sting" operation that led to his arrest. On December 15th, an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms confidential informant called Oakes and said he would be in Massena the following day on a shopping trip with his girlfriend and wanted to stop by. The informant and Oakes discussed various guns and ammunition clips that Oakes had available. On December 16th, the ATF informant met with Oakes at Straight Shooters in a meeting that was covertly recorded by federal authorities. The informant told Oakes he'd dropped his girlfriend off at the mall and that he was interested in buying a firearm. Oakes showed the informant how to convert a MAC-10 pistol to fire fully automatically and how to "elude detection by inquiring police," the criminal complaint says. The two settled on the purchase of a Colt rifle and began the federally-mandated background check. Oakes told the informant that if the check didn't go well, he would bring his girlfriend back and have her fill out the forms, the complaint says. The NICS center rejected the informant's application. Oakes told the informant to bring his girlfriend by and have the purchase take place in her name, the complaint says. The informant brought his "girlfriend," a State Police undercover investigator, to the store and had her fill out the application, listing herself as the buyer of the gun, according to the complaint. Oakes told the informant that "every time you purchase a firearm, she's gotta fill that out or you do," the complaint says. When the State Police undercover investigator asked Oakes if she could get in trouble, Oakes allegedly replied, "You can't, that's yours. You bought that. You bought that from me and your guy here, he was not with you when you purchased this... end of story...ya got me?" The federal application for a search warrant at Oakes' business says authorities expected to find firearms that were not recorded in acquisition/disposition records as required by law. They also expected to find machineguns and other guns banned by federal laws, the application says. Copyright 2010 Newport Television LLC All rights reserved.
