Opinions on new rifle for dad
Hey guys. I want to get my dad a new rifle for his birthday. All he has right now is a 100 year old 22 short....he needs something else. What caliber would you guys recommend for fun shooting...17hmr, 22 lr, 22 hornet, 22 mag...? Is there a certain rifle you would recommend? I'd like to try and keep it under 500 bucks if possible. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Fun shooting you are going to have a hard time beating a good .22 - cheap ammo and generally readily available. EVERYONE is going to say 10/22 for the answer to that question.
Depending on what you mean by fun shooting - i have a marlin .22 mag that i love to plink with b/c it gives me more range and at least mine is more accurate than my .22LR If he wants to reach out a little further then a .223 would be the ticket for the same reasons - cheap ammo and relatively available. However if you want to be unique there are a million options out there and your gonna have to define what you are looking for a little more specifically for anyone to give you much help. |

With a $500 budget, I'd get a high-quality .22LR bolt or lever action. If he's into varmint hunting the .17HMR or .22Mag would be a good option, otherwise the ammo is too expensive to just shoot paper IMO.
Larger calibers can be fun and useful, but again kind of expensive for plinking. Edit to add: Every time I see this question asked, the answer is almost always the CZ 452 (and more recently the 455). You should be able to get into one for around $400, maybe less. I think I would also look for an older but still in good shape Marlin 39A - they bring a lot of money but are a very nice rifle. For less money, I'd look at the Savage Mark II and the TOZ-78 in all it's varieties. Personally, the 10/22 would be way down the list although for $500 you could modify one into a pretty nice shooter. Last edited by Red Dwarf; 02-03-2010 at 06:40 AM. |
