Groove Cube - The ultimate float trip/camping speakers!
So we go on a lot of float/camping trips every summer and we always want music on the river and back at camp. We usually draw for the short straw to determine who has to pony up the $ for the cheap radio that seems to get ruined every time. This got old really quick and the radio never lasted more than 2 hours on the river before being runined and it couldnt be heard from very far away so this year I decided to man up and build something that would last and be loud as hell.... This is the website I used for the idea.
http://www.motorboatyourself.com/page10.php It only took about 4 hours total to do and I was able to use some speakers I had laying around and the optima out of the pathfinder to cut down on the costs a little. I ended up using a dual CD player with IPOD controls, alpine type s 6 x 9's, pioneer 6.5's, and a marine style fm/am antenna. I sealed up all the speakers with silicone and I am not planning on it being directly in the water. It is really loud and the cooler I used has wheels so it should be very easy to tote around the campsight, softball practice, river shores, etc... As you can see I set mine up to also be able to float behind a canoe. : ) I'll get some better pics of it in the day light soon. What do you guys think? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

This and the innards please!!
What do you have setup to charge it? Is there easy access to the terminals or something? Maybe a connection point or something the plug it in when near a power source? I'm curious of the runtime on one charge too. Anything other than the deck pushing the speakers (amp)? I love it btw!!!!

I built something similar into a cheap walmart speaker box for my Sirius, back when there was no such thing as a sirius boombox.
I used a booster pack ad tore its innards apart for the charging jack and on/off switch and battery. The battery was basically a lawn tractor battery. It would run my Sirius reciever, in a car dock, and a cheapo wal mart deck for about 6 hours. I would imagine that a full sized car battery could power it all day long. Here was the discussion about home made bomboxes then. http://www.digitalradiocentral.com/s...ox-w-pics.html sadly my pictures are long gone. nice thing about takig apart the booster pack was the charge indicators it had. We've had the same problem. We tend to go on rafting trips and it gets a little rough... and a little drunk. That would get thrashed quick. I dont even try for music anymore. One guy does, but he puts a stereo in a big huge drybag.

I thought this was a pretty cool idea:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Wate...uotIt-floats-/ he sandwiched plastic between the grill and the cone to keep the water from the speakers. |

Fawk the pool. That thing is meant for river tubing....
And if you've ever been tubing... Well, you won't be hoping for bikinis, because who wants to see boobies get covered up??

I actually haven't been in years, but I can't imagine much has changed up there. It's a good time with a large group of friends. Get your cooler its own tube, and bring a lot of beer, sunscreen, and beads. Bring a rope so you can tether your group to shore near the cliff diving rocks, because that's a good spot to hang out. Oh... and try not to think about how much piss is in the water with you.

We used to take a similar stereo setup down the Salt River, except we made it out of a smaller cooler.
The Salt River tubing area is way to close to Apache Junction to be throwing beads.......... you are likely to see a pair that will haunt you for life! ![]() Bring a DD along, cause they will bust your ass before you even leave the parking lot!
