Montgomery Wards "Western Field" .243 cal rifle

Anyone know anything about them?

I have a co-worker who is offering me one for $100. All he knows is it is a Montgomery Wards "Western Field" in .243 cal. I havnt seen pics of it yet, but apparently he stained the wood black and painted the barrel and receiver with flat black high temp paint. He said it reminded him of a model 70 Winchester.

Just wondering if it is worth my time $ money. I figure for $100 I couldnt go wrong. I am going to see it Monday. Once I get the model and serial #, I'll post it up.

$100, in decent shape, yeah hard to go wrong.

It very well may be a Winchester. Or Mossberg, or Savage, or it could be a Mauser sporter. Possibly even a Sako. They put their name on all sorts of stuff.

Sako -> buy it.

If you can get the model number, here is a chart:

Like atblis said, it could be anything, but it looks like most were Mossbergs.

had a Western Auto made rifle, turned out it was a Marlin. MG and Western Auto put there names on a lot of things. 100 bucks is great if it shoots straight.

Western Field was made by Mossberg, Savage, Colt, Noble and Mauser for Monkey Wards. However Mossberg was a major supplier for most rifles from what Ive read..

Are you a really that gullible? Have you priced hydra-shoks & reloads lately? I'd swap ammo straight up for the gun, or just pay the guy the $100.

I was able to look at it today. Its a Western Field M767. It cross references to a Mossberg 800a. Overall, it doesnt look too bad. The action seems a little rough and the "re-finishing" that was done isnt horrible for a beater. I am going to get it right @ $100.00

It may just be the photos, but I'd try to get some range time with it before I paid a bill for that one. See how it shoots, make sure it shoots better than it looks.

If not, try talking him down to around $85

It looks better in person. Not great, but definately worth $100.00. The pics were taken with my cell phone with no flash because the battery was low. I used photobucket to lighten them and it makes the pics look bad.

EDIT: I saw where you identified it as an 800.

The Mossberg 1500 were built by Howa, which is now labeled as Weatherby Vanguard.
The original rifle was put into production as a S&W, they sold the rights to Mossberg, and later they sold to Weatherby. The whole time they were produced by Howa.
The actions are very strong, accurate, and have a very good quality barrel.

If the gun is not in pieces or a rust bucket, you better castrate yourself if you don't buy it for $100. The action is well worth that.

I've got one I have had since about 1986. It was originally a 243 and shot amazingly well with an 85 grain nosler. I rebarrelled it in 1996 to 7mm-08 with a douglas barrel.
It has been my primary deer rifle since I was 15 years old.
