AR Pattern 308s

So lately I've found that I am lusting heavily after having an AR pattern rifle in 308. After plenty of research, it seems that the 308 AR market is just plain fawked.

It seems like there are three players:
  • Armalite
  • DPMS
  • Everyone Else

Armalite seems to have the nicest production rifles going... But for no particular good reason, I have focused on having SR25 style magazines, which leaves Armalite out.

DPMS has an EXCELLENT price point, being able to get into a complete rifle for a about $1K right now. But they have that stupid fucking kitty-cat on the side of the gun. Stupid? Yes, it's a dumb reason, but I absolutely HATE that fucking kitty-cat. Why the fuck do they feel the need to put cartoons on the side of their guns?

CMMG Lowers are only a little more expensive than DPMS, and while their rollmark is pretty too, at least it isn't a goddamed kitty-cat. I have had some lousy customer service from CMMG in the past though, and am not in a hurry to give them any more business.

Then comes all the other players... There are some beautiful recievers out there, like Iron Ridge, but they are priced way more than the DPMS... close to 1K just for the reciever set.

Does anyone out there make a basic 308 reciever, without stupid clowns and unicorns and wild beasts stamped all over it, at a decent price point? It doesn't need to be some fancy CNC piece of art... a 308 equivalent to your basic mil-spec 5.56 lower is all I'm looking for.

I'm going to chime in as a happy Kitty Cat owner. That is all.

I'm no help for most of your questions, but would like to point out that pmags will work in an armalite with a little bit of modding.

Rock River's LAR-8 is a nice rifle. We've sold a couple of them now. They take FAL mags.

my only gripe with the armalite is the price of the mags... with that said it is bad ass. it holds just over moa and has knocked down anything i have asked it. it owns the pigs

i was at a gun show and the guy at this ebr table said dpms won the government contract to build 308 rifles for them so the dpms rifles will have a bigger following in the aftermarket. i do not know if that is fact or not i am just reporting what he said. some one can yay or nay it i am sure.

I've seen the Rodck River, and it looks like a solid gun. I've kind of crossed it off the list though, for the same reason as the armalite, being that I'd like to be able to us SR25 pattern mags. I've also read that it is back ordered up to a year. Don't know how true that is, but it does make me a little hesitant.

Is the RR compatible with DPMS or Armalite style uppers? Or are their uppers unique to their lowers?

Classic Arms has a DPMS Sportical .308 with 2 mags, hard case, and cleaning kit for $899. Not sure if that is something that you are looking for or not...

Would you consider G3 mags? Scott on this board makes some cool billet lowers for G3 mags. They are about the same price as CMMG stuff.

Definitely not looking for something like that. I'm pretty set on the SR25 style mags. If I do decide to deviate from that, it will probably be for an Armalite.

Armalite, DPMS, and Rock River are all different uppers. So can not mix and match.
I believe the barrel nut between all three is even different so you need to have a specific forearm.
Grips, Stock, mag latch, bolt hold open, and trigger group are really the only parts that are shareable.

I am not sure on the LaRue OSR, I thought they were Armalite pattern, but don't know for sure.

LMT, POF, Noveske, no idea.

Fulton and CMMG make DPMS pattern.

It's my understanding that Noveske is Armalite pattern, POF is DPMS pattern, and the LMT may be DPMS pattern. It is a monolithic upper and takes SR25 style mags. Don't know about the reciever interchangeability.

It really is a shame that their is no standard pattern like there is in the 5.56 world.

Your definition of "decent price point" must be a lot different than mine!

Tactical Machining has a decent lower without kitty cats and it's DPMS patterend. Fairly well priced as well. I've got one of the 80% .308 lowers just haven't had time to finish it yet.

My distributors have the Rock River AR10's in stock. Also, ordering direct from RRA has been a 2 week lead time lately. Not bad at all. DPMS and Armalite are also fairly easy to get now that the rush has subsided and prices have dropped.

My preference in order (similar gun and price point):
1) RRA
2) DPMS
3) Armalite

Could you elaborate on why your preferences run in that particular order?

Now that's what I'm talking about! Nice clean looks... no wild beasties. Just a gun. And affordable.

Great customer service as well. If it's in stock it'll usually ship within 24 hours. If you call in the order they'll let you know when it will ship. Very friendly.

You can build sub-MOA, but I wouldn't expect it.
