I live in a fairly rural area, 20 miles from Charleston.
I know that if "the checks quit coming" that a large portion of Charleston is going to be headed my way.

Bridges are going to be dropped and roads closed. People with local knowledge will be able to get around. Those without will be stuck.

The next step to rid the community of the undesirables.
Burn them out, shoot them if you have to.
They are not going to be leaching/stealing from me, and other good members.
If you are not from the area, you will likely be shot.

So those of you with a "I'm going to the country plan", you had better understand how those in the country are going to react.

The biggest thing is to understand the scope of the situation and get the hell out of dodge, before everyone else realizes how dire the situation is.

Don't think I am crazy, many people will end up with the same mind set as I have. However, I understand it going in - most will be "learning on the fly" and come to these conclusions.

I was explaining this to my wife the other day. She is on a kick about building a bunker/root cellar/cold cellar. I was all about a project like that this summer.

I explained to her that when shtf, you wouldn't be fighting off the government or zombies, but all the people from the nearest town that live off of welfare after they looted and stole everything they could. I can only hope when they run out of water and start drinking out of the susquehanna river they get dysentery and die quickly of dehydration.

I've always wanted a cellar, and hope to build one this summer.
It has nothing to do with SHTF, it has to do with I don't have enough room to store my canned goods.

With a cellar, I will be able to can more, eat more stuff from my garden year round, and free up quite a bit of storage in the house.

The Mormons take it pretty seriously. LDS even has canning stations to help you get there.

A years supply of food really does make sense. Even if you plan to grow your own. What if you have a shitty year? Bad storms, weather, hail, etc. what do fall back on when there isn't a grocery store, or when inflation is a million percent? It's not like the plan would be to live off of that food alone for a year. If that's the plan, you're only delaying starving to death by a year.

I agree, there was a modular on my property when I bought it, so right now my garage has more square footage than my house. We had a large garden last year, but not a good place to store much. I just plan to make mine suitable as a shelter in the case of an emergency. Adequate ventilation and such.

I would rather have and not need than need and not have. Being prepared for an emergency could save your life, being unprepared could cost you it.

You've never been down on your luck or around a family down on their luck?

I know plenty of poorer country families that hunt year round out of season to support themselves, they usually have themselves stocked for a year on supplies for meat and veggies. It is also somewhat short growing season, trying to grow indoors to support a family requires alot of funds and usually works better as using hydroponics.

The last thing on their minds is collapse of an economy, they are just trying to survive week to week.

Being down on your luck i can understand and yes i have been myself. I've swept parking lots for 5 bucks, mowed lawns. cleaned septic tanks cleaned bricks.. etc. etc.

I also read Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse, which while a good read, to me was fairly far fetched & exaggerated. Both books align with what you're saying though. Quite interesting.

For those in the city, something I just started looking into is Aquaponics...

Aquaponics (pronounced: /ˈækwəˈpɒnɨks/) is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In the aquaculture, effluents accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity for the fish. This water is led to a hydroponic system where the by-products from the aquaculture are filtered out by the plants as vital nutrients, after which the cleansed water is recirculated back to the animals. The term aquaponics is a portmanteau of the terms aquaculture and hydroponic.
