Which home defense/comp shotty

Ok guys im looking at getting a shotty for home defense/beginner 3 gun competition. I am having trouble deciding on a few things. The main item is mag capacity. In looking at a standard Mossy 500, 870 etc. most are 5+1 or 6+1. Do i really need the extra capacity of mag extentions? I ask because i can get mossy 500s cheap as can be. But you cant extend the mag.

So that would mean i would have to be looking for an Rem 870/1100, winchester1300, or Mossy 835

Do I really need the extended mag?

Thoughts?

The main 3 guns I'm looking at due to cheap budget is Maverick 88 field(cut down of course), maverick 20", and Rem 870, IAC hawk 982

Have you looked at a 590SP or A1? the 20" barreled guns are 8+1.

I had one for years, found it at a local dealer's used rack for $225:

My two favorite shotguns of all time. I sold my Blued bead site 590 20" to buy my 930 SPX. I love it. I am going to have to buy a parkerized ghost ring 590 some time soon though, because I miss having it around too.

In all seriousness... go shoot some stuff that your house is made out of with some 5.56. You might be surprised what it will/won't go through.

Buy a shotgun though, if that's what you want. Deals are around, if you keep your eyes open.

shot both many many times.....but back to topic at hand.....is there really a need for 8+1 capacity? or get a cheap 5=1 version?

How many times are you going to have to shoot someone?

For competition use, I'd get the higher capacity one- unless in sinks you into the same class as a Saiga.

I believe there is. The way I look at it on a tube fed gun, if I am going to have a gun barrel that is 18-20" long, I want that much magazine tube as well. It doesn't add that much weight (difference of MAYBE 6-8oz loaded), and you can always use the extra ammo. Also, I hate to reload. I am the kind of person that prefers 30 round magazines so I can just focus on shooting, and not have to worry about reloading all the damn time.

Shotguns are the inferior weapon.

That's why 2 gun matches are becoming more popular. People are finally realizing "these stupid shotgun things suck."

You'd be surprised what the spread looks like with OO buckshot out of cyl choked 18" barrel at 10-20 feet (typical HD range). Aim is still very important.

People who chose a shotgun for home defense, need to shoot 3-gun. Competition will make you a better shooter and teach you the exact limits of your firearm.

That said, you should be able to find a used 870 Express locally for under $200 no problem. If it were purely a toy, I'd say try and find a cheap used Ching-chong import, but for HD, get something you know you can trust forever.

3-gun shotgun is won on reloads. 8 rounds is a must. A longer sight radius is nice. 21-24" is average. If you want to be competitive shell caddies are a must and can get spendy.

If you want compact you can always switch barrels and remove the extension for around the house.

2. Once again, please notice the size of the entrance spreads....2 1/2" to 3 1/2". Therefore, anyone that says, "With a shotgun, you don't even have to aim. Just point it in the general area of the bad guy, and you can't miss", does not know what they are talking about.

You can very easily miss with a shotgun. You must aim to hit your target.

Yes, it does penetrate a lot. But any load that is going to be effective will need to penetrate walls to have enough power to penetrate bad guys. If our only concern was to be sure we didn't penetrate walls, we would use BB guns. However, BB guns will not stop bad guys.

Therefore, we must use loads that will STOP bad guys, and this means that they will also penetrate walls. So, be sure you hit the bad guy and do not shoot into walls where loved ones are on the other side.

I have a mossberg persuader 500 20 inch barrel 7+1 capacity. Got a really good deal on it used.

However I still really want a 590A1. 8+1 is better than 7+1 right?

Hmmm ... this discussion sounds all too familiar. I did some patterning this past weekend with 12 ga. 00 Federal Premium Personal Defense with Flitecontrol fired out of a Mossberg 500 with 18.5" barrel.

The buckshot hasn't even started to spread at ten yards. Aiming a shotgun is critical.

Seven Yards (The hole in the upper-right corner is the wad from a different load I was testing.)

Ten Yards

Used Beretta 1201FPs can be found pretty easily for $4-450. 6+1. Good for intro 3 gun and HD.

Gentleman.....sincerest apologies for abbreviating the word shotgun. Secondly, I never said you did not have to aim a shotgun. Simply stating that with the way my AR is setup, I would be way more comfortable using a shotgun at night, in low light situations. Secondly I do agree that buckshot does take time to spread out, but the trauma inflicted from a round of buckshot at 20ft vs the same of a 5.56, I feel that the shotgun is going to have a significantly greater effect.
