Did I do alright?
I picked up a 1917 Eddystone rifle, and a 1943 Enfield in .303 flavor for $600. Is anyone aware of any issues with the Eddystone as far as weakness in the receiver like what is found in low # 03A3's?

Nice score IMO! The M1917 (Eddystone) doesn't have any receiver weaknesses that I know of - its pretty much built like a tank in the receiver. I shoot some pretty hot .30-06 handloads through mine without any problems at all.

Yes they do. When they were rebarreled they would form VERY small cracks in the receivers, and are unsafe to shoot. I would carefully check before shooting. |

As far as I know this is the original barrel, as with everything else; cartouche ect are all matching. I bought it from a friend who needed money to fund a lever gun purchase. He threw in the Enfield to sweeten the deal, cause he really needed the cash.
I've been at the range when he's shot it, and it didn't go boom!! in the bad way. Anyone know ranges in serial #'s, that might have the weaker metal? Or does it weaken during the rebarrel due to how tight they screw/ press them in. Last edited by Steele; 07-15-2011 at 11:52 AM. |

From "Hatcher's Notebook".
On page 222,he mentions the experiments of the Springfield Armory Board. I) The low numbered receivers are not suitable for service 2) There was no known way to make them servicable 3)It was impracticable to reheat treat these receivers 4)The Board recommended that the receivers be withdrawn from service and scrapped It does not specify what exactly a "low numbered" receiver is applicable to the Eddystone rifles though...
