cars suck

float planes are cool.

Finished this today, just in time for the club's annual event this weekend.

Test fly tonight.




I think this should just be the RC forum, not car specific.
It's got a 600W drivetrain spinning a 12x6 APC. Weight sans floats is about 3 lbs, floats probably added about a pound and a half. They're foam cored balsa construction with two layers of glass.

it's not hard. Obviously you should be a proficient pilot with wheels first. The landing is ust a little different, you have to glide long and shallow, then haul back on the elevator to flare just before touchdown and stick the back half of the floats in first.

and they don't sink when you crash. As long as you've safety wired the motor to the floats you won't lose the motor when/if the firewall breaks off because you slapped it down hard.

They'll float in pieces for 15 minutes or longer, I've never lost one before we could get the recovery boat to it.
I have pulled some up that had a very expensive motor saved by just the fuel lines, so you should always safety wire them to something buoyant.

I had one when I was about 10, my brother crashed it into a tree. Broke in half. I was sad. Dad fixed it but it never flew right again, just too heavy from all the repairs.

So my inner child rejoices at V2.0

Flew beautifully. Took itself off the water at about 1/2 throttle. Didn't need any different trim from when it was on wheels. Doesn't look like I'm going to need a water rudder, plenty of authority taxing.

It looked like old school racer on a low pass.
Still enough power to do a few hundred feet vertical.

I'm really happy with it. It may never make it back to wheels.

This was the pit area at the club's fly in last weekend.


27 pilots, 40+ planes.

did some maths, played with the watt meter.
looks like I can go up 2 prop pitch sizes and not be sacrifice too much in the way of efficiency. 12x8 here I come.

Then someone gave me this:


Looks very sabre'ish. I've got a pile of 9g servos, an ESC and batteries, but I don't have the appropriate sized motor. So I'm going to order a park 400 sized soething or other and prop it with an 11x5ish prop.
I think it will become my new park flyer. It's never been flown or setup, just has some random hangar rash from sitting for ten years.

swapped to a 12x8 today. Motor pulls another 100W.
batteries are right at discharge limits, so I'm going to have to upgrade those.

I'll rock some test flights this afternoon and see how it flies. I may just go back to 12x6 to be nice to my batteries. We'll see, I very rarely use full throttle. unless it's pointed vertical I fly at halfish.

I also bought a kitchen scale today.
So this thing weighs in at a whopping 3lbs 11 oz.

So, got new batteries.

said fuck 3s and went to 2600 MaH 4s packs.
Swapped to an 11x5.5 pop. Top speed stays the same, just more RPM's. I've got an 11x6 as well to try, but damned master airscrew doesn't make the hole big enough to fit the standard mandrel and I didn't have my prop reamer handy at work.

Just wattmetered this fucker at 550W and over 5 lbs of static thrust. Running this poor Power 25 right at the ragged edge of current limits. Throttle management will be key to making it live.

weighs 4lbs 6 oz all up weight with floats.

less than 3 without.

it's gonna be a damned rocket ship off the water.

swapped the 11x6 to it.

pulled 630W and 43A with a pack fresh of the charger.

after about a minute it dropped down to 600W even and 42ish amps.
Right at the limit for what eflite says this thing will take before I melt the windings. Motor temp didn't seem bad even though it was a static test with it's full cowling, so I'm gonna rock it.

About to go test fly.

Love the super sportster, but low wing, light and a narrow float track make it very tricky if the water isn't glass smooth. Last outing a crosswind picked it up and flipped it and there wasn't shit I could do about it. Cost me a castle creations ESC.

so, picked this up for $50. It's an old seamaster 60 sized.
Plan is 6 cells and about 2kW. That's a 13x8 three blade hanging from the front.

AUW should be about 8 lbs.

this thing is ugly and I don't care.

fully beater seaplane. Every time I see something that's fucked up and want to fix it I have to keep reminding myself that it's a beater.
Dad donated a bunch of old hitec servos to the cause. some HS-425s, at least they've got ball bearings.
They came from the random servo tin.
I need to finish wiring up the motor so I can test the watt load and get some bigger 3s batteries to run in series.
I hate having batteries that only work in one plane, so I'll be limited to some 3s 4000maH packs, as that's the largest that will fit in some of my other 3s stuff. They should get the job done and make the balance correct.

Burnt my fingers soldering motor to ESC

13x8 three blade is redonkulous.

1250W is what is does.
60A@20v under full load with two 3s 4000MAH batteries in series.

so, started installing radio stuff. Rudder pushrod was terrible. WOuldn't come back to center, real jerky.
Ended up opening up the rear of the fuse to fix it


It looks like dude didn't know about servo reversing, because he flipped the side the horn was on. So ran new goldenrod (I know, but what else can I do with a retrofit?) and now it works. At least he didn't fuck up the cable to the elevator, because that's buried in the fin.

So dad patched up those holes for me, I finished wiring up the rest of it and it's now ready to fly.

Was close on my 8 lb guess, it's 7lb 10oz with 2 3s 4000mah batteries in it's nose.

well, finally made it out to test fly this pig.

Test flown in the conditions it was built for, 20 MPH winds, white caps and a tornado warning.


the good news is that it's massively overpowered and gives no fucks about wind. The bad news is that the hull is not watertight on top, and when you're taxing through whitecaps it takes on water.

So I'll waterproof some hatches and this thing is good to go. I've got to order some 3s 5000 mah batteries for it. She's an electron thirsty bitch.

the other projects is this cl-415 for a friend.

it's big and heavy at 12 lbs. It sucked as a glo plane so it got electrified. It's got about 1500w of power. 2 3s power systems on board. 4S capable if it needs it, but he's already got 3s batteries so we're trying to stay with stuff that has multiple uses.

well, batteries showed up for the canadair. 4s 4000mah.

it's got plenty of pull, and we found the hidden lead shot. So after we pulled almost 2 lbs of lead out of the nose and moved the batteries forward it comes up a pound lighter than it was on glo.

watt meter says it pulls 680 a motor. Right at 42 amps, which is the sweet spot for motor efficiency.

spinning 12x6s.

canadair flies well. Cruises at half throttle in a scale fashion. Gonna get 10 minute flight times.

Looks good in the air.

so, dad had farmed out the final finishing of his new northstar to a man that builds beautiful competition planes.

it does not disappoint:


fiberglassed fuselage, basecoat/clearcoat paint, monokote that was cut on a vinyl cutter. It's very pretty.

got the motor and ESC installed.


it's a 4120-18 @ 500 KV. Plan on swinging an 11x11 at about 1kw of power. 6s.

well sadly the northstar didn't make it past flight 2.
some sort of mechanical failure with the elevator. it went in a shallow part and impacted rocks.

well, the DX6i just wasn't getting the job done.

Yes, it's old, but you can't beat the feel of an old Futaba.

a new ultrapac (that unlocks the service menus) is $50 and it will store 132 models.
I'm going to hack it to 2.4 DSMX (lets not debate the DSM system, I've had no issues and I've got a shit ton of receivers) and feed it a LiPO pack and love it forever.
