T-Maxx Axle Questions

I have a T-Maxx laying around that never gets used. I was thinking of fabing up a housing for the diffs and shafts to make a couple of crawler axles from them. I am also assuming that the tranny from this thing will work well for a build when mated with and electric motor. Flame if you must, I am just bored and looking for something to tinker with at the moment. Anyone got any info on this, has it been done before?

Maxxles as they are called can be VERY strong. I've seen guys used pcv or aluminum tubing to fab up some solid axles for them... as for the tranny, it would probably be easier to use one from an E-Maxx.

What is the differences between the tmaxx and emaxx tranny? I have never seen an emaxx. I would assume the only difference would be the spur gear? I wanted to use the one I already have because it has all metal gears inside and it is fixed to stay in first gear already. I am thinking I can get my gearing where I want it by trying different combinations of gearing from the motor drive gear and the spur gear.

Reason I said E_maxx is because electric trans are all I've ever delt with... plus its just as strong. If you can get the stock one to work, go for it, although I think the emaxx one is lighter as well.

I am thinking of fabbing the axle tubes out of steel pipe to add more weight for traction and I think it will help to keep my center of gravity lower. I hope this will off set most of the weight up top. I have been doing some searching off and on, but I have not found anything that describes the process of building the Maxxles. Does anyone have a source for that and building a tube chassis? Do most people just use steel brake line bent and welded?

tmaxx tranny is totally different from emaxx
tmaxx tranny will not work it has clutches in the trans that engage it.. electirc motor wont spin fast enough to engage. the emaxx would be a better choice.. both are big heavy turds for a tranny though.. you would be better off with a stampede tranny. actually there are tons of better transmission options out there.. but a stampede is cheap and easy to find and they hold up great..

some guys just lock out the the maxx suspension and dont even do the tube axle stuff.. that way they can keep the high clearance axle..

for tube work most do use brakeline either brazed of welded..

You are right about the clutches in the trans. I totally forgot about that. It has been two plus years since I have fooled with this thing. Does the stampede trans have plastic or metal gears?

stampede tranny would work good for a 2.2 size tire, but with a super sized tire i would be hesitant. not from personal experience, but have read how a txt would blow out the tranny. i am not sure if it were yokes failing, or if it were gear issues. the emaxx tranny would be a bulletproof tranny for a super shafty. i would also narrow the track width down to what a clod or at most a twin force would be.it just seems that most maxx crawlers seem too wide for my tastes.

Yeah, the shafts are easy to modify for width. I was actually thinking of sliding the inner all the way inside the outer and run that width. Seems like it would give me the most spline strength.

VXL pede tranny is all metal.. they seem pretty tuff. I dont know if the would hold up to a super either.. a Emaxx tranny is pretty bullet proof

There are plenty of super class rigs running pede transmissions. Even back in the days of cut and shut Jumbo Kong's and Mad Force axles.

pede trans

I'm in the beginning stages of a maxx crawler right now, and am using a VXL pede tranny. There's a pic of the metal gears in my build thread. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137585

Looks pretty stout. I hope it holds up to the moab XL's. I chose it over an emaxx tranny due to having a much lower COG, but the emaxx tranny is supposed to be bulletproof.
