ever evolving toy grade RC

i have been getting into RC crawling fo a little bit now but still pretty green. I have a bunch of toy grades that are slowly turning hobby grade. My question is, if i have an RC that is 7.2 or even lower, can i use a slightly larger battery without burning up the electronics. I am in the process of building a TINY crawler for my kid that uses 4 AA's. can i just use one 9 volt or will the extra 3 volts kill it? and can i use a 9.6 in a 7.2?
