Scaled down Fun Buggy

Thought I would share this with you 1:1 builders over here now that I noticed Pirate4x4 has an RC area. I started this a few months ago and had my build thread over at RCCrawler.com.

I was breezing through Petersons site one day looking for ideas when I found Freds Fun Buggy in his blogs. After looking through his build pictures I knew this was the project for me.

My Eritex Atlas Transfer case.

my first hump was getting these made with out a cnc machine or welder

so I measured up, drew it out on cardboard, traced it onto my steel, fired up the band saw, gouged out 4 pieces then put a drill bit through each one to come up with these.

also tagged each frame hole with a slight counter sink to give the effect like the originals.

for the top pieces just cut 2 thin slices and whacked some holes through them. ( even center punching my marks it seems i couldnt keep them straight :-( )

bolted in a couple of pillow balls

and threw a couple pieces of stainless through them

fired up the Mapp gas

once the steel changed back to its normal color the filing and sanding began and whalla my first obstacle was done.

hump 2 was gonna be the front shock mounts and keeping as close to original as i could.

so i cut up some inner and outer pieces and brased them up the same width as a normal pillow ball.

cut and trim a blank piece for the top ...... can even say i put my blood into this one lol

blew some holes in them and sanded every thing down.

well i got the motor almost done. i started building it the Hemi way but just wasnt happy with it, even built a matching manifold to the original.

the dist up front wasnt doing it for me when trying to match the original so i pulled it out and went the GM way.

still got a bit of work to do on the pulleys and the fuel injection/fuel pump

now for some brain usage ....... how do i get this steering down to an inch?

found some lever thingy for airplanes to use for mock up

drilled some holes

chopped it up, added some bushings and ball ends

and i got something like this

this is just the mock up piece, the finished piece is aluminum and a about 3mm longer allowing me more throw.

so for the rear axle i dug out a block of the good stuff

After I painted it I noticed some weird effects in the paint and that it wasnt sticking to well. I painted the frame the same way I did my FJ project but something wasnt right. My Fj has rubbed some rocks well and didnt chip on me but this was chipping with my finger nail just to easy, I believe my black paint was just old and didnt bake well into the primer. Well I stripped it all back down with Purple power (this stuff is great) and found a member of another club that was willing to sandblast it again for me so now I sit patiently waiting for that then its off for a better paint job.

teaser shot of it sitting on suspension

I just had to send my engine back to the builders to finish the injector lines and fuel rail.

got my overflow tank built

and redid my rear air tank and battery hold down

also got my Optima wired up

luggage rack/light bar all made up

got curious about aluminum steering blocks and noticed the resemblance in the RC4WD ones and some stock TLT ones. i just knew this would be a weak spot for me so better to fix it now then after i break one.

measured up the stock ones

measured up some TLT ones from TCS

perfect match!

well theres definitely more to come ............ thanks for watching

That is completely SICK!!! I'd be in a padded room by now trying to get all that small tube work and detail done on that scale.

Feel free to send it to me till you get your sanity back. I'll take GOOD care of it for you. lol

Is there some special "not finished" detail I'm noticing about this diff cover versus the other pics of the RC axle???

EDIT: I'm looking at the 1:1 axle pics in post #1, compared to the RC axle in post #13, versus the look of the cover pictured above... Hmmm?

Damn! I'm not sure if I'm more impressed with the 1:1 build or the scale build...
