I don't know if Matt was a member here, I count his aunt as one of my closest friends and it broke my heart today to hear her crying on the phone. Family is flying to Seattle today to bring Matt home.

Im very sorry to hear of the loss of a great driver. Its always a damn shame when a life is lost during a race. Despite all the precautions we take and safety measures we cram into the cars, Rally is still one of the most dangerous motorsports out there. Those of us who compete know well that this rally stage could well be our last. Its always in the back of our minds. Tragedy like this is a painful reminder that its a deadly sport we play in. Despite this, we will soldier on.
Matthew Marker's name will not fade to dust like so many others. He was of a special breed. He was a Rally racer. He was a part of a close family of men and women who were willing to push the limits of whats sane and live life to the fullest. For many drivers and co-drivers, every time we strap into our cars and start the engines, we will remember Matt. We will remember him.

My brother in rally, may you rest.

I remember him saying once a long time ago at a local mud bog/bonfire bash, something like "You can always get better with practice, but can't always recover from a mistake, be careful out there, practice makes perfect." Shortly there after he took off shredding across a corn field, typical Marker fashion, in his caged wagon with the sweet pivoting headlight in the grill.

It always sucks to loose a racer, no matter the sport. RIP schoolmate, my prayers are with you and your family.

Hard to believe more than a year has passed.

From 2006 to 2011 I ran Sweep for the NW events and had the difficult task of being on the scene of this crash. It was definitely an experience that will stay with me forever.
