Another Ham Class!

OK, OHV folks, another RTF sponsored ham class! This class is designed to take you from zero to HAM radio operator in no time at all. It will be held in the Sacramento Valley area, in El Dorado Hills.

The dates are:

Class: January 21st, 2012, 9:00AM until 5:00PM, with a 1 hour lunch break – in this session, Barb will give you everything you need to know to pass the test…help you through the hard stuff, show you how to study the easy stuff, and where to look for info between classes. You should expect to be in class all day and you’ll learn a ton of stuff! She’ll also give you info on how to study for the test the easy way.

Test: February 4th, 2012, 9:00AM until about 2:00PM – in this session, an examiner team will meet you when you arrive. They’ll administer the test, and after you have passed, John will teach you stuff about using your radio in the practical world and give you a bunch of info about getting emergency help, setting up your radio, and using it in the Rubicon as well as general info for other areas. You’ll leave the session with all the tools you need to get started, including a radio, if you want one.

Radios: Once again we will offer a “group buy” price on the Yaesu FT-60 portable radio and/or Yaesu FT-8800 mobile radio. We don’t make any money on this, we’re just trying to get radios into the hands of OHV users. After you sign up, more info will be made available on that. These are the same radios we have offered in the past, and have proven to be durable, practical, easy to program and understand, and work very well.

Cost: The cost for the class is the $15.00 charge for your FCC license…that’s it! I will get prices for the radios as the date gets closer and will put that out via email to those that have signed up.

Book: The book you need is the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 2nd edition. It MUST be the most current book (July 1 2010). I believe they are cheapest at Amazon.com. and fastest from Ham Radio Outlet. You MUST have the new (July 1, 2010) version of the book as you won’t be able to follow the class without it AND the questions on the test are different!

When you are ready to sign up, email John.Arenz@RubiconTrailFoundation.org with your name, physical address, and phone number, and we’ll put you on the list!

Thanks to John and Barb for putting this on again. This is a great thing for the OHV community. In a few weeks I will know if my wife and I will be able to do this. I'll sign up myself, my wife and my brother in law on your email once I have those days confirmed free.

ROCK HUGGER 12-06-2011 07:22 PM

No age limit, we've had several folks that age take the class and pass it. We do ask that they have an adult there "with" them so that we aren't taking a liability chance with them. Hope to see you there with him!

He wouldn't take it unless I was there, looking forward to it.

Hi, quick question here...

I registered at the email address you provided a few weeks ago. I was attempting to purchase the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 2nd edition (July 1, 2010) off Amazon as you suggested, but for some reason I cannot find that edition.

This is what I can find:
  • Ham Radio License Manual with CD (Arrl Ham Radio License Manual) by arrl (Paperback - Nov 1, 2010)
  • The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual by H. Ward Silver (Paperback - Apr 1, 2010)
  • ARRL Ham Radio License Manual: All You Need to Become an Amateur Radio Operator (Arrl Ham Radio License Manual) (Arrl Ham Radio License Manual) by H. Ward Silver and American Radio Relay League (Paperback - Jun 1, 2006)

Can you please let me know which book to purchase?

Thanks!

overlandnomads 12-09-2011 11:35 PM

Or I could just look on the ARRL website! http://www.arrl.org/shop/Ham-Radio-License-Manual-Revised-2nd-Edition/ Found it on the first try!

If the ARRL gets around to sending my VE badge anytime soon, mind if I come on February 4th to see how all of the testing process works?

sludge puppy 01-05-2012 12:11 PM

BSD, when did you send it to them?

Looks like a great showing. I have 5 more people that kept taking their time emailing John. Looks like they are out. Procrastinators :)

71BRONCO71 01-05-2012 12:44 PM

I'm a little bit of a slacker too!
I just ordered my book from that Amazon link foxeod posted.

See you all in 16 days :flipoff2:

mrdoregon 01-05-2012 01:21 PM

Any Idea of the time frame for the next class? I MAY have to relinquish my spot. Im not really sure at this point. But if the pattern remains consistant i have no choice.:mad2:
I home care the brother and he has a bacterial issue. They put him on anti-biotics and it clears it up for a bit. we have been thru this 5 times now.
about the time this class is, is when I expect he will get the shits like crazy. Again. (About a week after the anti-biotics are done).
im playing it by ear at this time in hope i can make the class. But i will know for sure by the start of next week.

foxeod 01-05-2012 02:24 PM

the rock heads may be doing a class in spring.

john and barb normaly only do one class a year, lots of effort in to a class.

good luck all see you in a few days

I sent it in on November 28th. I heard back from them today and apparently they're going to process a bunch next week.

sludge puppy 01-05-2012 06:09 PM

Good so you should have it in time, without a problem. They were probably short staffed due to the holiday. I had mine back less then 3 weeks from when I sent mine, was shocked it was so quick. Congrats :)
