I'd like to see less man made anything on the rubicon. I think another tree and a plaque would be more suiting to something that stood there before man ever created the trail.

The county owns the tree....but different ideas are definitely bouncing around. I know it's just a tree...its earned the right to be more than to be firewood or mulch and there's quite a few people thinking in the same direction.

Never thought I feel sad about a tree, knowing nothing about it and never had a chance to ride the Rubi but....sucks to hear and see those pics. RIP Nature!

Wow, this is very sad news. Kinda wierd how one tree out of millions can affect so many lives acrosss the world. It truely is an icon of the Sierra Nevada.
I think it should be laid to rest in Spider Lake to provide shelter for the fish for another few thousand/million years. Maybe on a bright clear day, we will be able to make out its shadow in the bottom and still enjoy its peacefulness.

Sad to see such an old tree fall.
![]() When I was there last summer I'm pretty sure there were 2 other trees growing from the roots of the big tree. I'm definitely not a tree expert, but it might be a second life for a very old tree. |

I'm pretty sure the public owns the tree. I could be wrong.

I think it would be cool to find a big/high res, really pretty picture of the tree, and then do a mosaic (sp) with that with hundreds of photos people from pirate share to be on that.
Print it out and (if allowed) use a piece of that tree to make a plaque. Add a bunch of lacquer, and it should stand up to the weather fairly well. Just an idea... |

It's already been established the County owns it. I'll quote John's OP, they've already asked that people please not go souvenir hunting.

I sent this information off to my 90 year old Grandfather...he's wheeled the Rubicon since the mid-50's, he was photographed in the Big Sluice in the late 60's in his "new" Bronco for 4 Wheeler Magazine....
His reply...was priceless.... What did you send me a pic of an old tree? Did you think I'm old enough that I planted it?? It is kind of sad to see an old friend pass on ,gotta make room for the next tree!

Wow!! There are some really cool ideas here. RTF has been working with the County to ensure that we do justice to the Icon of the Little Sluice. We have some time to plan while the trail slumbers under a blanket of snow. Thanks to the County for their support of winter use of the trail so we could be there to document this event and get a start at being proactive in getting the word out to everyone so we can all do the responsible thing to preserve the history of this magnificent tree.
As it progresses, I am sure that FOTR will be needed to work on this project and RTF and FOTR will work with the County to develop a plan. I took these pictures in 06 because there was a project going on where pictures were being sought of the Little Sluice. I was not real good with the camera and the clouds did not help but this is one of the better ones I took that day. Scott edit: added the picture and narrative

Yes Bummed for sure, The oldest recorded Juniper Tree is up on Sonora pass approx, 3-4 K years old.. But what to do now? Let nature take it's course or Like some others are saying. Carv it up and sell pieces and raise money to help keep the Con a trail for years to come? Sounds like FOTR is all over it.
