Trail Conditions 2013, go to first post for current conditions

Currently, updated December 19th, 2013, the trail conditions are:

Loon trailhead: About 6 inches of compact wet snow on the trail, substantial and dangerous ice in the bowl!

Wentworth Springs trailhead: 6 inches of snow, track is in, easy wheeling.

Tahoe trailhead: Unknown, but it will be similar to Wentworth.

There are very few people on the trail this time of year, always be prepared to extricate yourself! Well set up and maintained rigs, lockers, 37” plus tires, a good winch, 100’ of extra cable, straps, and hardware are necessities to move in the snow. Always carry food, shelter, and warm clothes. Ham radio or satellite phone are the ONLY ways to communicate out of the Rubicon.

Temperatures can be VERY cold, in the single digits, go prepared!.

Always carry a toilet...Wag Bag it!

Fire restrictions have been lifted, get a permit if you want a campfire!

Hope this helps.

The snow cat has been down the road from Chalet to Kiosk...so as of Saturday, it's now compacted. After that...it's hit or miss. The snow was great going up the bowl to Ellis...but coming up back up to Gatekeeper was HORRIBLE. It was like ash in the fire....super dry...no texture, no grip...probably would have had to spit, to make a snow ball.

I feel so inadequate....no obligatory, commode shot.

So something different.

The snow going to Ellis up the bowl...Fantastic! Thank you sun.

The snow going back? HORRIBLE. Soft...and ridiculously dry. Even with tracks...traction was at a premium.

Nice Ken, thanks for the update. Hoping for a little rain and maybe warm temps to help with a re freeze. Get a little more base for next weekend

Thanks for the update, Ken. As you know, haven't been in a position to get up there. I'll update the first entry.

Snowshoed in the Tahoe side today to McKinney Lake. The snow was like flour, very very light. There was a good 6-12" of fluff on top of a pretty solid 4-5' base. We were blazing trail after the staging area and before that it was just some other snowshoe and snowmobile tracks.

Right before the staging area:

Went in Loon today. Berm at the plowline is still pretty big, snow is still sugary and deep, and the track goes as far as the Hot Rock and no further. Weather was gorgeous, but still VERY difficult travel, even in a well built rig with all the right stuff...snow is just too deep and powdery.

Snow conditions are finally getting better over the bulk of the trail. After the warm cold spells last week the snow is compacting and there was actual traction today!
