Lance, did it snow up there today, or did it rain? Does the rain help it melt faster? Thanks, for the help, I plan on making a trip up there on the 18th from Sac to check the snow level. Thanks for keeping us updated on the snow levels.

I can't tell you how many guys have written me, frustrated with this weird weather. I too am about to go wheeling nuts.
But my grandaddy always told me three things: 1. I couldn't MAKE fish bite; 2. I couldn't teach a pig to sing; and 3. I couldn't change the weather. ![]() So our job is to be prudent while the Rubicon is wet, snowy and just plain less fun -- we can find someplace else to wheel for that weekend. Remember, we are being watched this year because of all the attention our trail is getting, and our efforts to maintain it and keep it open. My club is heading over to NV do do some desert stuff -- at least it should not raining over there. So, put your thinking cap on and cogitate on a new place to go for Memorial Day. That's my thinking... Del

I wonder if this subject should be moved to Gen 4x4 section?

I posted this message in two other rooms here.
*** I'm strongly suggesting people NOT plan to do the Rubicon on memorial day weekend. The snow is still deep and the trail will NOT be ready for travel. We are under the microscope this year on the trail, and any damage will probably hit the LA times. Be smart and think about our future. Visit the Rubicon Trail talk section of this POR BBS for more info. Del

Del,
I was looking at some pics in the general 4x4 section posted by Rudezuk. It looks like there is WAY too much snow on the trail for a busy day like memorial. I know the people here on POR are most likely going to stay off of the trail. I know I only plan on camping at loon and maybe taking the kids out on the entrance slabs and playin around. But from the groups that I here from it seems like there is still going to be tons of people there on Memorial day weekend. What I want to ask is what is the Friends of the Rubicon doing to advise the general public about what is happening up there. I have been wheeling the con for years and usually in conditions like this before it was a fun weekend to break through the snow and pass through the water crossings. The small amount of people I have talked to are oblivious too whats going on there. Most of them still have great plans to go up and wheel there asses off regardless of conditions? Even with a large amount of wheelers here on this board and others, there is still a much larger number of people who have no idea. So is there some sort of plan to advise people this holiday weekend before hand or when they arrive? Sam

Sam,
I've posted info on all the chat rooms I could think of, trying to inform people of the less than good conditions for wheeling right now. I've posted it to the Friends of the Rubicon list and it's been spread around. Plus the Gatekeeper program will be in effect (is in effect) so handouts will be given out at Loon. I've also ensured we have several law enforcement folks up there to help watch over the trail. it's about the best I can do -- hoping that all of you will help me spread the word as we encounter these situations.
