Littering vogue last weekend
Spent last weekend on the Rubicon, my group was composed of myself and a friend in a TJ. We hit Loon Friday night about 10:30. We had camp setup and were chilling out at the Box about 12:15 or so. Passed probably 4 or 5 camps and one broken Toy on the way in.
Very little trash going in: I picked up 2 cans on the run in; an empty Bud can and a full Hanes Rootbeer can (Yum). Moderate trash on Saturday: Saturday we ran Old Sluice and had lunch at Buck, then headed back up the slabs. I picked up Budweiser cans on Old Sluice, plus a water bottle. No trash at Buck, yeah! By the time we got back to Spider, there were probably 30+ rigs and several camps setup. Picked up 6 Bud and Bud Light cans throughout the afternoon. F$#*@%G slobs came out on Sunday: Broke camp in the AM, my friend broke a u-joint on the short bypass to the Box. Picked up a couple Bud cans in/around the Bypass.Who the F*CK camped at the flatspot at the 90* corner before getting to the Box (the spot that's all nice smooth dirt, at the bottom of that rocky section after dropping down from soup bowl, if going to the Box)??????? Picked up about a HALF-RACK worth of Coors cans, 3 soup cans, a bunch of broken glass from what looked like a Jagermeister bottle, a 2-3 Gal water jug that had been set inside a still smoking firepit!!! I used the remainder of the water in the jug to put out the smoldering fire. Picked up another 6-10 cans, Bud, Bud-light, Coors, from that camp to Loon. Unbelievable. The trail was gorgeous coming in, and looked like a dump 48 hours later. There is a completely unnecessary bypass over bushes, on the slabs behind Spider on the way to Buck (the one point that gets narrow before you start down the first steep grade. The bushes are trashed. Walker hill sinkhole isn't in horrible shape. The route up into the campsite to hit the bypass is getting eaten away though, mud at the bottom of that berm is about a foot deep. The gatekeeper was in pretty good shape, not too muddy at all. Interested to hear what it was like come Sunday evening. Saw some a-holes using a long prybar to drop boulders into the Box. Shooting pics of them doing it was enough to curb that activity. They sure weren't very friendly after that though. ![]() I hope the senseless littering, boulder-prying idiots that converged on-trail last weekend are an exception to those that visit the trail this year, else we're in big trouble.

It's amazing what happens.
I can't believe that people just leave trash like that. Post up the pictures of the fools with the prybars. and as far as the gatekeeper goes how well do you think an old flatfender on 32"tires will do. I'll be heading in late tonight this will be the first time for my CJ-3b I'm wondering if I should head in tonight or just camp and head in in the morning.

Your 3B will do fine.
The GK rocks are different than last year, but they're really catoring to SWBs. GK and the gatorpit are the only hurdles before Walker, provided you know your way in the Granite Bowl. If not, hope you have good headlights and can follow the oil spots.

I've been lost many many times at night on the Bowl
I now l know my way prtetty well across the bowl My main concern was the gate keeper. this is usually the only part of the trail that I worry about. With the new Jeep and alot less lift and wheelbase then I am used to. It is good to hear that it's catoring to my wheelbase this year. My mom will be making her first ever trip to the Rubicon. and she will be driving her YJ in at night . BWAHAHAHAHA evil laugh

Kudos for stepping up and self-policing, Chris. I would have been tempted to throw them and their bar into the Box. ![]() It is the height of arrogance for a few people to think that they know what's best for our public resources, and take action without consulting -- and working with -- the user groups. Whether it is 'some a-holes using a long prybar' or Feinstein and Boxer... fight it. If anyone wants to change the trail, the right process is through the Rubicon Oversight Committee -- working with the established user groups. Randii

I try to stay away on weekends. Maybe now I will just go to take pictures. Hmmm an hours drive. A half hour walk around the back of Loon. That would give me several hours................

My group(and Dan-H's group) spent almost 8 hours cleaning the area up last October(the north-east end by the trail). I can't understand why anyone would throw their trash on the trail! It just doesn't make sense, do these people not care or are they just stupid?!? Jes

Yeah, I was briefly suprised about the lack of trash at Buck. Then it occurred to me, We only saw two other rigs (2 niiiiice 'Runners) the entire time down Old Sluice, while at Buck, and up the slabs.... It's too early in the season yet, for the scourge to venture past Little Sluice.
So much trash in less than a day and a half... and that's just the trash I found... grrrr

All my days will be weekdays this year. From what I saw last time I was there. There are alot of fawktards this year. You can see it every friday when you drive up or down hwy50. On memorial day someone actually stuck gatorade bottles and some sort of snack box on the branches of the big tree that overlooks the box. There are always going to be these people there. We just have to have more people like Chris. If there are 5 of them and 10 of us we will manage. Aspecially with the much larger presence of the law this year.

I agree with Cruzila about staying away on weekends. We're making our first trip of the year in a couple of weeks . . . Going in on Monday.

Doesn't matter, Mike. From above: It is the height of arrogance for a few people to think that they know what's best for our public resources, and take action without consulting -- and working with -- the user groups. Mike knows that
I think he just wants to know what to expect of the box condition Sorry, I think I misplaced my smilies..... oh, there they are, next to the Kotex. Better slap one of those on, too. Ahhhh... now I feel better. ![]() I watched the action a bit on Saturday -- looks like the crack line has opened up even further, but to my eye, the line to the right by Toyota Rock still looks best. Looked like two dryer-sized rocks in past the entrance -- rear steer might be handy, but even then, looks like you're gonna have to nerf and pivot to make the turn. Can't wait to get my truck back together to take a whack at it! Anyone wanna lend me their keys? ![]() Randii |
