SEP. 6th WORK DAY
WORK DAY: Sept. 6th
We have a tentative work day for Sep. 6th if we can get enough folks. Let me know if you can make it. Spillway area, Loon Lake. No wheeling involved. Cars can make it to the project. We're pouring concrete, buidling a foundation, doing carpentry work, etc. on our kiosk building we're putting in. It'll be a fun project. You can camp at a real camp ground, even bring your RV. ![]() Let me know (PM or email) if you can make it. thanks, Del

See the buliding we're going to move by helicopter after we get the foundation built/poured.

The building was the old gauging station connected somehow to the spillway overflow. Water measurements, etc. for the lake.
We're going to pick it up by big copter and fly it to the new foundation we'll be pouring/making on Sep. 6th. Very cool. Del

Look for Del's RV at the base of the Loon Lake spillway at 9:00 am on Saturday...

OK... urgent tool loan required.
We need a portable torch setup for cutting holes in the steel beams we're using to lift the house and chain-sling it under the helo... Please ring me up direct 916-223-1608 if you can are within an hour of Sac or Placerville and can lend a portable setup... I have access to a fullsize setup, but I'd need to move it layed down. ![]() Randii

![]() Thanks also to Scott, who lives too far away from me to pick up, and Aaron, who could also have appeared. Great to see folks pitching in for FOTR! ![]() Randii

GREAT WORK DAY!
Another great work weekend! FOTR managed another great group of volunteers to get the half-century historic metering station ready for its scheduled airlift to its new foundation, where it will serve as the FOTR Rubicon information kiosk. With last-minute volunteers and a few guys recruited from the trail, we managed to get the work done! , and in a timely fashion! Hard work, sure, but we were having a blast, too!
We had a bunch of hard-working volunteers, but I was really impressed with Brian (Flashlightman) -- he kept everyone on his crew pretty busy ( even me a coupla times, if ya can believe that!), and still managed to swing his own hammer a coupla times. Somehow, he also engingeered up a way to lift, control, and connect a pair of 200 pound (plus?) steel beams (14 foot long, 4x4" box, and seemed like 3/8" wall?) more than ten feet off the ground, with only one ladder at his disposal... Special thanks to GM Construction for loaning us a heavy trailer and a cutting torch setup -- we put them both to good use! Randii

I just got home. Will have pics up very soon. It was AWESOME. I'm telling ya, folks, I've never seen harder, better workers than FOTR folks. If I had had folks like this in my previous Army life, I believe I could have won a whole bunch of wars!!!!
![]() Just kidding......it really was something to see the work we got done. I'll dig out my digi and get some flics up very soon. The old building is rigged for airlift and the new foundation is pourded and girdered, ready for the building. Whew..... I'll also get a list together of those folks we need to thank. And don't forget, one of our mottos is to buy from folks who support us....give them your business whenever you can. thanks to all of you who showed up or just offered gear and/or ideas, or just were there in moral support. Del

It didn't fly.
Too heavy -- the CDF Huey was rated and fueled to max at about 4000 pounds at Loon altitude, and the kiosk-to-be is bigger than that, it seems.FOTR's rigging worked PERFECTLY, though, and we're considering another run at it with a bigger helo. Please contact Del Albright, FOTR's Trail Boss (jeepndel@goldrush.com) if you have contacts with anyone who might have access to *BIG* rotorcraft (maybe a Air National Guard twin-rotor, or a Sikorsky Sky Crane?)... We ain't skunked yet... we have other options if we can't find a helicopter that can lift what we need... Randii (needs more coffee)

We figure now it weighs 6000 pounds. So we need a big boy copter. Air or Army National Guard training exercise would be a great idea if anyone has contacts.

I am going to go up this week and look at it again and see what would be involved in splitting the roof from the walls and then we could move 2 parts if we cant get a big chopper.

Nick, when you go up, take a sheet of plywood and board up the door....
We need to talk offline (Del, Nick, and whoever else has contacts or ideas) to identify the direction we're gonna go. The BBS is good for news, but bad for determining strategies... I'm sure that there is more to this than meets the eye, since it is a SMUD/Forest Service building, a CDF chopper, and FOTR manpower. Randii

Hmmmm.... here's a thought. We keep the current building exactly where it is, and build a new kiosk. The new kiosk could be quite simple, almost a bulletin board with a roof, not needing 'inside storage' because we already have that, a few hundred yards away.
Easy enough to nail the old building back down.... Just brainstorming, Randii |

Because it is a sound building and to pay for a helo was FAR cheaper than building new. Unless someone wants to find a nice donation from a supply house.
