An article from todays paper... (Sac Bee)

EL DORADO COUNTY -- A 28-year-old Wilton man was killed early Saturday when he apparently lost control of his vehicle along rocky Rubicon Trail, an El Dorado County route popular among four-wheel-drive enthusiasts.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Faria said the accident occurred about 4:10 a.m. Saturday, just east of Loon Lake and Ice House Road.

Faria said the man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of family, was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from a Toyota pickup and the vehicle rolled over him.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified as an Elk Grove man, 32, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, Faria said.

From what I have gathered, there was no alcohol involved.
Bad line on the slabs and no seat belts in use -- either the driver or the passenger.

The passenger got away without a scratch.
The driver flew out during the roll and the rig roll bar rolled over him, crushing his back below the shoulder blades. His wife was in the truck behind -- but it was dark.

CPR was performed but to no avail. The victim was prounounced dead at Ice House Resort where the ambulance met the folks who transported the victim off the trail.

It's so sad.

Night wheeling on the Rubicon is VERY popular with a lot of folks. It's a whole new experience.

Properly set up with Rock Lights, and a guide who is VERY familiar with the trail a night run is a treat. Nice and cool, stars are out, no trail traffic, etc.

Obviously new to your sport (see # posts), I'm trying to understand why someone would be doing this sort of thing while not wearing safety gear?

I was at the CalRocks event and was a tad disappointed in the safety measures taken. There were spotters that were practically underneath the vehicles that were balancing on one tire as well as spectators that were in harms way should a vehicle have rolled their general direction. Granted, I understand this was a person that was on the trail on his own accord--not with an organization, but it could have easily happened at the CalRocks event that I went to in Lucerne. To my understanding, CalRocs is relatively new, but even so, shouldn't there be more concern in this area so as stories like these dont arise?

R.I.P

I do not know the family involved but I do know funerals, after being in the business for several years and they can get quite expensive. If family is willing to accept what would everyone think about getting a fund together to help the family out in their time of need. I am sure one of the mod's would be willing to take part to have a person with some power over the board oversee the money? I can't afford allot but would be willing to start it out.

sincerely,
my prayers are with the family and friends

Tom
