Rubicon Grant for 2004
Our hard work, dedication and agency support has really paid off for the Rubicon Trail for 2004.
At the OHMVR Commission meeting last week, the Commissioners approved (on consent calendar) $237,000 for our trail. WOW. El Dorado County, especially Vickie Sanders, got the grant for us, with the Rubicon Oversight Committee standing in support. This is awesome folks. We'll be doing a lot of great projects next year. I think this is a record for the Rubicon. It is YOU that makes this happen. Because of your support, because you show up on work projects and meetings, because we care about our trail, we are going to really set some threshold records never before seen! The Rubicon is truly becoming a world wide example for how to care for and manage a trail. Part of our success as Friends of the Rubicon lies in our organizational abilities. That boils down to folks like you helping out and leading projects. We know how to get things done, right! We don't waste time on projects. We use our collective knowledge to figure out the best ways to tackle something. And we make good use of our leadership capabilities. If you want to do more in the leadership role, and would like some training, be sure to look over the new correspondence course that I now offer entitled the Recreational Leadership Training Course at http://www.delalbright.com/RLTC/rltc.htm I'll be relying on several of you to help lay out next year's projects. So stand by to jump in and continue to make a difference! At your service, Del

Great job with the grant proposal, Del!
Should be interesting to see what our new gubnor does to non-essential functions like the OHM Commission... the division may get to help us spend these dollars, and they're a heckuvalot more friendly to motorized recreation than the commission is under Spitler! ![]() Randii

Randi could you clarify a little ? Well, I'm speculating, so take it with a grain of salt. The incoming governor can't repopulate the board by executive order (though there are two spots opening up and one that has been open for a bit now, so there is an opportunity to change the makeup of the board). What he *CAN* do is make a sweeping executive order that all non-essential committees (including OHV) be put on temporary (few years mebbe?) hold. This would immediately reduce the oversight costs, though the various divisions would remain operational (just without all the commission oversight). I reckon he'll also ask for an across-the-board reduction in expenses (with a few sacred cows exempted, like edukayshun). The divisions then would budget for the reduction amongst themselves... Losing the oversight is not likely to hurt us, since the OHV Commission, specifically under Spitler, has a stranglehold on any expense that isn't resource mitigation or enforcement. Though I am certainly happy to see some dollars go to those priorities, I'd like to see at least equal dollars go toward developing OHV recreation, and the OHV commission was VERY resistant to that, and wise grant-writers had to tilt their proposals accordingly. Not everyone in the OHV division is super-friendly to our cause, but IMHO, as a whole, the division is more flexible than the commission. I have often opined that Davis, though not our friend, certainly didn't do as badly as he could have with his OHV commission appointees... but the other members of the commission have resulted in a logjam of the very dollars that our hobby puts into the coffers. All my opinion, supposition, and speculation... so take it for what its worth. I hope Schwarzenegger can engage in Sacramento effectively and repair the budget/fiscal mess while at the same time EXPANDING motorized recreation opportunities. I'm sending a letter to that effect to his offices, and asking them how we can engage to help... We need to be heard effectively, not as special interests, but rather as political allies and motivated constituents. Randii

Ok missed the meaning of what " division" in your first post. Got it now. I agree with ya there. I've only had one bad experience with a ranger or Park employee in 20 years. Your last paragraph is spot on, the Commission is great example of of gov being hijacked by special interests and becoming a diservice to it's constituents. That FOTR recieved a HUGE grant in the face of this is remarkable.
Del I already sent you a congrats email yesterday but I may have left out a thank you, so thanks for the good work! |
