if I have cell service I will post updates as they happen.
supposed to hit Rubicon Loon lake at about 1AM.
hit the trail tomorrow.
than Fordyce on Saturday.
I have a feeling it will not go as smoothly as last year.
I am sure we will have some delays.

Other half of the Texas crew mentioned above here watching for updates. We'll both be in well tested and maintained rigs fully locked on 37s, have winches, straps, snatch blocks, GEN3 SPOT GPS messenger, MREs, water, etc. We really want to make it all of the way through to Lake Tahoe, but if we have to turn around, it is what it is.

Does anyone have a good line on the weather forecast for this weekend? Seeing varying things on different weather sites, some of them not as positive as others...

Would love to see that trail update as well!

I use this:
National Weather Service

From my experience it does pretty well.

Spoke with a friend who is up there today and they are having rainstorms with snow showers mixed in.

Got it, thank you. The forecast for the weekend doesn't look too bad... hoping for some good breaks and great weather.

Supposedly one of those guys in that group wrapped their axle at Soup Bowl.
I didn't watch entire video though.

They gave us some brake fluid at Granite Bowl before they headed in on Saturday morning.

From the comments of that YouTube:

"We started at Loon and went to went as far as Buck Island. Then we stayed the night there and then drove back the next day. The video is of about 1/2 of the trek back."

... Still no word on the Tahoe side since last update on it being impassible.

Dont think tahoe is unpassable.
I (we) went in the tahoe side the weekend before last and we went as far as lilly lake just before miller lake.
We could have kept going but I was getting tired of winching other people out all day , there was a grand cherokee with open differentials that kept getting stuck in the snow over and over , most of the rest of us (with lockers) were having no problems and could have kept going.
The staging area on the tahoe side is bare dirt and the road was clear with no snow for the first mile or so (maybe 1/3 of the way to miller?) once we got up close to miller it was all snow but still passable , a couple rigs passed us near lilly lake on there way out but not sure how far in they got.
Didnt go this last weekend because my jeep top is off and it was snowing but plan on going this weekend weather permiting , we plan to try to get to observation point on sat or sun, I will post up after this weekend , I'll try and remember to bring the gopro so I can just show ya all the conditions.

Great news! I'd rather worry about crapper conditions than impassible snow on the trail! Thanks BobCat5.0!

Sorry for the delay in responce. we are of course off the trail by now.
We ended up making it all the way through.
about 3 miles from the Tahoe side there were very large snow drifts. maybe 6 to 7 feet deep.
I think it was about are the miller lake area.
it was pretty tricky but doable.
as we left Tahoe and grabbed some food going through Truckee they shut down Hwy 80 West bound so we were unable to continue to Fordyce South side.
long story short we took some dirt, well snow covered dirt road and headed towards the meadow lake north side of fordyce. we were about 2 miles from meadow lake when we turned around and headed back home to Oregon.
there were about 10 foot snow drifts but what turned us around was the snow bridge that had colapsed. it was about 7 feet of snow with a creek running through it. if it were the middle of the day I would have done it just for fun but it was about 10PM and we were beat.
After realizing that fordyce was probably under 5 or 6 feet of snow it was time to go home.

I'm impressed you made it that far to Meadow....it's considerably higher than the Rubicon.

Someone called today about conditions....can you describe the snow from Buck Island to Observation point (top of Cadillac). Any issues?

between buck island and observation point there was no snow at all on the trail.
this was on friday though. there was that storm that moved through friday night so I am not sure if that changed anything. I would think it would be melted by now.

Any further update on the conditions on the Tahoe side? Have a group going in this weekend from Loon, intending to go thru to Tahoe if possible.

Thanks

Was going to post earlier but the gopro vid I was recording didnt record ,the cam glitched and shut off, we screwed around with it for a few and gave up and continued wheeling.
Anyway we made it past the snow to the steps just before observation so yes the trail is broke through , there are a few tough spots and a few mud holes but not too difficult
I think it will be completely clear of snow in a couple weeks maybe less.

It's clear. We just got off the trail a few hours ago. There's still a little snow on the Tahoe exit, but not much.

Thanks, things are clearing out fast now. Speaking of telepathy, look back through the thread I think you'll find I said "by June 1st" a month or more ago.
