It sounds like a spring vehicle recovery! The last time I saw a spring recovery was south west of Kirkwood ski area @ the 8,500' level. About 15 years ago there were two rigs abandoned on a "Motorcycle trail". I found a 1st gen Toyota with a completely caved in roof with broken axles and theft of parts, and an early Bronco with similar damage. Owners were lucky to walk out alive cross country back to Silver Lake in December with 3-4 feet of snow.

Definitely Spring. My friend lives a few blocks from the Con exit, and he got 8 feet Sunday - Wednesday. Probably 2 feet more near Observation.

Brings back memories of the last time I recall this October 2003. They camped after breaking down...then hiked from Winch Hill #3. Tried to get a helicopter to lift it out, but it was $35,000 in 2003 to do it.

Didn't actually recover it till June.....I found it at the turn to Meadow Lake.

Happens up here pretty much every year. Unfortunately, our main road to the mountain is very well traveled and people suck, so the rigs wind up vandalized, stripped and smashed.

There was one the other day where 2 rigs got stuck right at the beginning of a big storm. People kept trying to get back almost every day. By the time they got to them, about a week later, there was ~10' on them there was a pic somewhere of someone standing in the bed of a truck holding a shovel straight up and arms length and you could barely see the head of the shovel.

Anyone have the link or remember the younger guys that buried the K5 on at least 40"s and I believe a toyota pickup years back? I believe their mom came on here asking for help. They got airlifted out and went back later to recover them. They were under a ton of snow.

Sounds like a story from up here a while back. I don't remember reading anything on here about it though.

Edit: that's not the one I was thinking about. Cool thread though.

Years ago when I lived in Tahoe I would cut down grader chains on my '74 Blazer and go snow wheeling. It was amazing the places we could go. 36" tires back then, '69 Vette 427 never broke anything.....lucky

June or July.

This was last week....my buddy Jeff tried to make it to the first rig and take photos. He didn't make it to the staging area. Snow collapsed him into a hole, and the photos are the next day when he hiked back with a big shovel.

Reminds me of this. Pic was taken near the 3rd water crossing.

We came across it in on Fordyce in October 4 years ago.

Later that evening we found the owner hiking down committee to it by himself (his friends didn't want to come back to help). He was carrying a steering box & battery IIRC (hiking mind you).

He spent the night with us & we pulled him out in the morning.

Rolled into the parking lot on 2-3 debeaded tires.

Spending a winter encased in ice cant be good. With snow levels one could cruize right over them and not know. Maybe.
