More awesome pics .

Were you guys dealing with variations of snow hardness?

Up here in Idaho it's either soft snow and slushy or near rock-hard and concrete on a given day.

Snow chains on all four corners do wonders on both snow variants.

I Snow wheel in WA/ OR and the Sierra Nevada mountains. There have been a few times I could have used chains in icy conditions, but don't want to carry the extra weight. Have had to winch a couple of times because of ice, but don't plan on building/using chains.

Almost all of the snow wheelers I know don't carry or use them. We usually don't have a lot of ice. Compacted snow, yes but all manageable on the roads/ trails we are on. I usually snow wheel with about 1.5- 2.0 psi in the tires in severe conditions.

Just before "Soup Bowl" above the trail. Looking at Loon/Pleasant to the right and Spider to the left. The trail in the "Benchmark" area is completely drifted in with 45 degree and steeper snow. Quite the view.

Gonna be a while before it melts off but temps have come up considerably in the past few days so who knows.

Is WWS open? There's a county Road Closed sign between the Loon turnoff and Airport Flats.

Lets see how good my Indian Tracker skills are

You went in on Sunday around 10.00AM and are running 37x13.50x17" Toyo MT's. Turned around right at the Gate for Red Fir Camp Ground, Just before dropping down towards the hole Oh and I think you were solo, one rig.

3 rigs 2 on 37's one on 35's, all toyo MT's was about 10:30
We saw the hole and didn't think twice about it, just turned around =)
We will leave that stuff to the buggies and die hard snow wheelers

I was close

The hole is not that bad but I would recommend dropping into it and not trying to stay high right. High right could lead to a roll to the left into the hole. Now coming out on the other hand is a whole other story.

Recent shot of Tahoma staging area. Tippy tops of the bathrooms visible. About 12' on the level. Wow.

More great pictures of just how "off the chart" this snow year is. Thinking of doing another Rubicon snow wheeling trip the week of April 25 thru April 30. The Toyota Mini Snow Monster is getting restless. We can't have a restless Snow Monster can we?

Wentworth Springs Road Update: We aired down at plowline at 9am Saturday hoping to see the 2’ of new March snow…maybe 10”… We hit NFS52 only to run into 3 trees down ˝ mile into the trail. We just turned around instead of removing them heading back up to Wentworth. About 2 miles up we started finding the “tank traps”, 4’ to 6’ snow with 4” to 6” of water running underneath. Looking at it looks like a snow cave, approx. 1’ high X 2’ wide with a stream running under it. Picture driving on good snow then dropping a front tire into a chasm up to the hood. I lost track of where we were. We turned around somewhere near where NFS52 enters Wentworth Springs. The snow tunnels were too deep to cross, I took pics but with it snowing most look like white on white. Here are two to show snow depth with my buddy in the picture for height reference. Then me spending 15 minutes getting through this wall only to give up a mile down the road.
Snow conditions 10” new good snow over 4’ packed wet snow over 1’ snow tunnels, large winch required, 9.5+.

We made it to airport flats a couple of weeks ago. It's getting mushy. Winches and straps got a workout.

Good fun just cruising along then the floor gives out and you drop 4'

It that a smittybilt strap? I got one a couple of years ago for x-mas..still sitting in the plastic wrap. it looked kind of dubious to me.
How did it do?

Awesome pics in this thread!

Not sure, my rig (silver Jeep) was doign just fine

It's a snatch strap, the ones that kind of bungee. Those scouts are a little on the heavy side so it was pretty tough to get him going with a Jeep. If anything it was bungeeing me back instead of him out. I think we ended up having to winch him out of there that time.

got a report from buddy who owns Vermillion Valley Resort (east of Fresno) who went up on snow mobiles last weekend. 15' at Kaiser pass then. Now, add another 5-6' of heavy wet snow they got down there from these last few days.

Evaluation: unless we get a fast melt all the Shaver Lk area trails won't be opening up till Aug
