Trail Conditions 2017, go to First Post for Current Conditions

Currently, updated January 15th, 2017, the trail conditions are:

NOTE: The trail is currently open. Check here or the El Dorado County page for most recent updates.

Loon trailhead: Five to seven feet of new snow. Cold, traction is difficult at best, deep and fluffy. Good time for a sled or tracked vehicle

Wentworth Springs trailhead: Same as Loon.

Buck Island to Rubicon Springs: Same as Loon.

Tahoe trailhead: Same as Loon.

More storms coming over the next week.

Winter is here!!!

Boilerplate Winter Advice:

There are very few people on the trail during the off season (October through the melt), always be prepared to extricate yourself! Well set up and maintained rigs, lockers, 37” plus tires, a good winch, charging system, dual batteries, 100’ of extra cable, straps, and hardware are necessities to move in the snow. Always carry food, shelter, and warm clothes. Ham radio or satellite phone are the ONLY ways to communicate out of the Rubicon.

Temperatures can be VERY cold, in the single digits, go prepared!

Always carry a toilet...Wag Bag it.

Fire restrictions are NOT in place, which means campfires are allowed with a permit, but you still must have a permit from the Forest to have a fire or propane fired device (stove, fire, etc.).

Hope this helps.

Great shot, Tim. Lets just hope all that snow stays there for the next few days.

Yes it is. Talked to the County yesterday, they are worried about the amount of water moving on the trail and the damage it might cause with the pineapple express coming in.

Keep in mind the closure doesn't affect the intertie portion of the trail between the kiosk and the WWS intersection.

Were you planning to go up?

Nah, I haven't wheeled in years. I just saw that post on FB and no where else so it made me wonder if it was accurate.

Awesome pictures. That's a lot of snow. Makes me wonder why I don't have a snowmobile.

1-15-17.

Had some work to do but managed a little trip to Ellis to check on things. Trail looks great between bowl and Ellis. Completely snow covered and no running water. That could change as things are heating up a bit.

Great Day!

Tim-
I think my wife and I saw you Sunday afternoon. We were snowshoeing by loon, headed back from the second bridge above the Kiosk. It was her and I along with our Black Lab. Your snowmobile looks familiar; I believe you passed us on your way out.

This you 😉? I hope I was courteous enough, didn't want to scare the puppy. Hence the reason I always slow down or even stop when I pass folks

Yes that is us. You were super courteous. I actually made a comment to someone about how appreciative we were on how slow you passed along with almost coming to a stop when you saw us and allowed us to have Jett (our lab) to heal up out of the track.

It was an absolute beautiful day up there Sunday.

Even though we as motorized users are perceived by some as destroying the world one gallon of gas at a time, I always try to show as much respect for other users as I can. Now coming out to plow line in the rigs and finding it completely blocked by Priuses is a conversation for another time

It was an absolutely amazing day up there.

Yes I have also seen this before with obvious 4X4 tire tracks going over the snow berm/ plow line. 2wd vehicles parked at the base of the berm, completely blocking the road!!!! No owners around, so I have carefully winched the vehicle(s) out of the way, so we could use the PUBLIC roadway. Others may not be as nice as me.

Agreed! We worked hard to get the County Road designated correctly and on the ROG (Recreation Opportunity Guide) from the USFS it is now marked correctly and even warns about parking but with that said, I think the county and or Forest Service could make some marked improvements in signage.

I think one simple sign just off to the right of the plow line area warning of parking in front of the area and stating "County Road, open year round" would go a long way to help. It would also help with the perception and user conflicts. If the ski/snow shoe community are under the impression they own the mountain during winter, we can't really be surprised when they are mad or shocked to see a vehicle going down the road.

I know the El Dorado Nordic Ski patrol is having their open house at Loon Lake Chalet next weekend. Maybe someone from the county could suggest to them they have the conversation with the visitors about the Plow Line and the County Road. Maybe even have a sign made for the Chalet showing the map attached here and highlighting the "Combined use" part.

Just a thought
