In '03, one of my best friends, Simon Schranz passed away, 4 months after we graduated. Some of our other friends built a leaf spring memorial for him and placed it on the rocks at the lake, the rocks we all jump off of! I haven't been on the Con for a few years. If some one gets close, sneak a pic for us!

Rest In Paradise, Simon!!!

Pics are small
Pretty sure thats the Cross for Steven Mayo
He was killed 9-14-02 on Foresthill Road at the Upper Lake Clementine turn. He rolled his Jeep going around the turn there and was ejected.
Personally did not know him, only reason I know of this and remember it, was that was my wedding day and we passed by him as he was laying on the ground and the medics were attending to him. The next summer I was on the con and saw that same cross on top of the rock. Decided to climb up there and find out who it was for.....freaked me out when I read the name and RIP date....

thats interesting

next time i go up i'll check out these plaques. their should be plentty of crosses. when i was up there in 03' a man died and his wife had 2 hike out too call for help. He didn't have his seatbelt on and got crushed when his rig rolled. his wife had her belt on and lived. So i'm sure there is plenty of crosses up there for people and animals that passed away on the trail.

Not on the trail, but on the way...my little cousin at 19
When you see the cross at the sweeper turn to Southfork, remember to slow down and enjoy your time up there.

ya, that is steve mayo's... his son rick dated my sister for years, and ive been close to the family for awhile. really sad how it went down. a group goes to the cross on the anniversary of his death every year. there is a plaque at the top of slabs right after the gate keeper...

I always wondered if it was speed or mechanical failure that led to steves accident.....i kinda figured it wasnt his first time driving the road and he prolly knew it well....

Ok so I have a dumb question. Is it ok to put up a memorial plaque for someone? Does it have to be off the trail or can it be on the trail? My wife knew someone that loved to wheel up there when he was younger. He is no longer with us and thought this might be a cool thing for his wife to see, but thought Id ask before I did something wrong.

It isn't a dumb question, it comes up from time to time, especially since a lot of folks are so moved by Rubicon and love it so much... more details on monuments/memorials here: /forum/rubicon-trail/390873-monuments-signs.html

bringing this thread back...

...because I think it's pretty cool. Found this at Spider in a very obscure place this weekend. Don't know anything about it or the individual.

I'll put some more pics up later.

Wow..that's fancy.

I know Randy doesn't like them...I don't mind them as long as they aren't seen on the trail...if you have to hike around to find it....I don't mind them.

Wow! Thanks for posting this! This is the plaque that I commented on earlier in the thread. Chuck was a member of the Sierra Treasure Hunters back in the 80's and we ran the trail about 5-6 times a year as a club back then. My dad, Chuck's brother-in-law and another family friend from the club put this in back in 91/92. I was with them when it was done and have a picture somewhere of the three of them after installation.

And here's another. Didn't know Alex Forwerck or his family, but he was a young man who was killed crossing a street in Vacaville where he lived. I don't know more details than that, apparently he and his family had connection with Spider and the Rubicon.
