We are scheduling our annual "Kids on the Con" trip for late September where we camp at the trail head and wheel in with the kids. We usually camp in the trees just past the camp ground by the dam, but understand that is now closed to camping.
We will have about 8 rigs, including some truck/camper/trailer combos. Where can we camp? We are considering the group camp ground on South Loon which is first come/first served that time of the year. I understand in the desigated camp grounds we can have camp fires, which is a hit with the kids. Last year we go snowed on and we could have no fires where we were at.
If those sites are not avaiilable, any recommendations on where to camp along Ice House Road that can accept the large group?
You can still camp there, but you cannot park there. Park along the road but safely out of the way, and hike that few hundred feet to the camping area.
If you do camp in an organized campground, be sure to be in visible residence during the evenings to avoid an ugly ticket.
Keep up the good work with "Kids on the Con" trip. :cool2:
Thanks. Big Fir - Is that the one by the Dam/ Spillway? If so, from what I have read they do not allow campers or trailers up there, only tents. Do you know different.
It is tents only, with no trailers or motorhomes allowed, so it may not be what mbrink requires. Real nice campground, tho, so it might be reasonable to park trailers in the Chalet graveled lot, and ferry folks up to Red Fir. If you do, check this other thread for Chalet parking info: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=389498 (and stay out of the Chalet paved lot!)
Other campsites to consider would be:
* Wentworth campground (individual and group sites), bumpy road on the way end may be too much for large RVs - no water access
* Loon Lake North Shore RV Campground (individual sites, close scrutiny of parking from USFS) - good lake access
* Airport Flat Campground - great 'node' campground (targeted at groups, ok for tent, trailers, and RV) by Gerle Creek - good creek access, with decent swiming holes
Thanks guys. Looks like Airport Flat is a good alternate if the Loon Lake sites are full.
