Spent the weekend at Rubicon springs for the Marlin event. When I was heading out this morning I saw quite a bit of carnage right at the little V-notch spot half way between the main camp and Cadillac Hill. Manzanita bushes roosted out all over the trail, new lines up the rocks, etc.
I don't think the property owners appreciate that sort of behavior. We are slowly but surely putting nails in the coffin! How hard is it to stay on the trail? :mad3:
i understand, idiots. however i have once been forced to veer off the trail for a little bit right past the helicopter pad.
two rigs were parked in the middle of the trail, one broken in front, the other in back was functional. i stopped and asked them if they needed help. they said no and also said they were having motor problems. looked like they had already been there for awhile. now when i have ever broken-down, the first thing i do is get off to the side any way i can to permit people to pass. these jackasses keep going about staring at their broken shit and i say, "um, you think i can pass or help you get off the side so i can pass". they look at me and say "well why dont you go around us with your extreme toyota". aparently they didn't like a young guy having something that was working better than their jankey crap. so that's exactly what i did while they made smart-ass coments. luckily the spot i went around was mosly dirt and a few large boulders but come-on; this retarded i'm not gonna move behavior is ignorant. it was already afternoon and i had to drive out and be at work the next day. i couldn't wait around for these morons.
i'm not justifying all of the stupid bypass behavior(go around cause it's too hard, or go around to make some new challenge), but this is one situation that i did not cause merely because some proud wheelers would not move their rigs even when i offered to help, and from my side it would have taken less than 5 minutes to get them off the trail. and this is not the only time this has happened to me.
but aside from this stupid situation, STAY ON THE DAMN TRAIL MORONS!
some situations just suck......we are all there for the same reason, to wheel and have fun...........and some just insist on being a**holes...i just dont get it.
Some times you just have to bite the bullet and say WTF. Last year my wife and are driving out the Tahoe side we caught up to three rigs well past Cadillac. I don't think they realized that there might be another gear in their trannys as they were just crawling along. I actually stopped my rig and walked up to the last guy while he was still moving and asked if we could pass them, he basically told me where to go.
I got back to my rig told my wife what the guy said. Instead of getting pissed we decided that we could turn around and enjoy a quite lunch at the top of Cadillac. It actually made for a nice drive out later, with no stopping, and we still made it home at a reasonable time.

We actually went up there and talked with the three. One of the Land owners came up to us and asked us to go up there with him. They were spotted going up that ledge and over a "tree" by another landowner driving in that night. When we got there, they had the music blaring and had a "rig stacking". IMO that is so 1995 :shaking: Anyway, we talked to them and got them to turn it down and move on. After that we looked around for a "tree". What we found was a bush ripped out of the wall. The branches went all the way across the trail and the rootball was about 18" long. I also talked to one of the guys the next day on their way out.
He goes by GC Bandit on this board. I normally would respect his privacy about this but feel he lied to me about the incident. If he had come clean and admitted the mistake..............There was a reliable (in my eye) eyewitness that said it was him doing the damage. He did admit trying the ledge. But fixed the blame on someone else I have no knowledge of being there. I was going to let it go because I felt I actually made a good contact with GC despite my mistrust of his story. Since it came up here I felt I had to address it and tell the story before it got out of hand.
To get the story straight, we were comming down cadaliac that night. And right about where the look out is there was about 5-6 other rigs that were parked there that we ended up following in to the springs.
Everyone of them went up that v rock. So i tried it as well. Started to go up it when one of the front tires started to pull and come off the ground. So i backed up and litteraly walked right up it at a idle!!! We parked up there and thats when the samari on 44 boggers, (which someone i guess at night could get confussed with a jeep on 44's) tried the ledge. He started to go up when his front end slided over to the bushes. He backed up and hit it again, at about 4,000 RPM's sitting there turning his tires back and forth. I dont know what else to say, im not going to sit here on the internet and agure my word over someone elses. But to get on here and say i lied to your face is a bunch of shit! But there was witness that were actually there watching the sami and we did watch the video we filmed from that night and u can clearly see the sami peeling out on the bushes.
It is out of hand. I watched the video last night with Mr. GC and it clearly shows no wrong doing untill the sami tries teh line and just tore the bushes up from what you can see.
Im all for keeping the trail open and policing when apropriate. But when an individual asks to be educated on a pic he posted then gets bantered again the following weekend for another so called incident when it wasnt even him and its on film it just getting a lil nuts.
why not just post the video and clear everything up...
Off trail driving isnt going to stop unless people make other people aware on site...not everyone is a club member or frequents these forums where these topics come up often and they may not be aware, unfortunately...but we can sure all do our best to express concern or anger politely.
Scott , post up a defenition of STAY ON THE TRAIL ..
I have overheard many conversations where people say ,
They don't mean here
What are we supposed to do , leave rig here and hike over to camp ?
How are we all gonna park here ?
Just go up that way and come around.
All these situations lead to going off trail but people seem to think that under these certain criteria it is acceptable and they refuse to believe that YES you do have to walk sometimes , and YES , you do have to park single file , and YES , it means not having enough room sometimes , and YES , it takes a major sense of adventure outa the trip , and YES , it means you do not drive up and around cause it is clear or there are tracks .

GC, My public apologies to you if were right about the bushes. Like I said I was not sure of your story but without knowing you for more than two PM's and getting a very reliable witness story, what could I think?? I did feel that the personal conversation we had was a good one. I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt because the proof was just not good. But now you say there is a video???
Get me this video and lets get some action on this thing. Can we ID this Sami? Let's get whoever IS responsible to do some sort of restitution to the property owners. I'd not like to see Rubicon Springs go the way of Spider. If we cannot as a group get control of ourselves, all is lost.

Let's just make it real simple and say if it is the easier of two routes. This can be easily argued but if it is a choice between a route through a V or a sheer cliff 4-12 feet high it can't be that difficult to see the difference.

I am tired of trying to defend the rights of OHVers when there is so much blatant idiocy being displayed on the trail. I am trying to. I sit at thse meetings and ask myself. Why would someone just back up and slam into a cliff and try to get up it?? Beyond the testosterone rush, I just don't get it? and to rip out vegetation in the process? Come on, isn't that just a lil nuts?
he treaded lightly I am sure and will not get a citation. I know brian and know he isn't up there to tear shit up. if the "man" was there at that time, brian would not have to drive off trail, and somebody with authority would have been there to make sure tunaman got through without getting laughed at, how can you scould somebody for trying to man up and get laughed at. how are you supposed to sit there and deal with stubburn people that feel they can sit in the middle of the road and block it and make everyone wait for them to finish there lunch and whatever they have to fix. you do know not everyone is so nice out there right? I have met my share of a$$hats on the trail, that decide my camp is the trail, and that I need to move out of the way.
Bryan is an educated and experienced wheeler (for a youngster) and is very aware of trail manners and conservation....if he sez he didn't peel out on da bushes , i believe him too . just to close the argument though , i wanna see the vid too.
id like some better defined routes in that area as well. i got scolded pretty good for taking this line and never got any confirmation as to the appropriateness of it? this is a 12-15 foot granite face, the top, the exit and everything above it is granite(no vegetation). i dont have any better pics, but it is right after the dam, to the left on your way to the springs, etc...
