I see people up there all the time shooting, is it legal?
I know pick up all brass and targets goes without question, but is it actually leagal to shoot there?
Yes. Although, there are some areas that it is not. I can’t remember all the rules, but
when we were shooting up there a sheriff came by and just said to make sure that we were shooting into a backstop and not to shoot with in 50 yards of a camp site. I think he also said not to shoot into the lakes or over them.

Don't shoot into or across lakes, no closer than 100 feet to a road, and not across a road (or trail), soil backdrop which is difficult up there with the quantity of granite...
Do you *really* need to shoot up there or can you go elsewhere, as there are quite a few people in the general area. Desolate is good for plinking.
Definitely clean up your mess.
Why go shooting in a populated area where people are possibly not visable. Why go shooting and subject others to your noise. Why not go to a range where safety and noise can be managed.

I'm not so sure about that. I've been registered here on PBB since 2002 but have been reading the board since I bought my Jeep in 2000. It seems like every year there are at least a few people killed or critically injured by vehicle mishaps on or near Rubicon. I don't recall reading about any firearms related deaths or critical injuries.
Now, the original question was about the legality of using firearms in the Rubicon area, given the regulations are followed and safe firearms handling is done shooting is a great and legal family recreational activity.
There seems to be at least as much, if not more, illegal and unsafe OHV handling as there may be firearms handling. I was up there just a couple weekends ago and there was some guy that crawled out from behind the wheel of his vehicle and could barely walk he was so wasted. That could have been as lethal as any bullet.
My point is Eldorado National Forest is a multi-use forest, for the most part, where many kinds of activities take place. What may be offensive to one group of recreationalists may well be an integral, yet legal, aspect of another's recreational pursuits, hence the environmentalists perception of us four wheelers. I would hate to see it if we all had to go to our respective little parks to enjoy our hobbies.
I agree, people get dumb in thier trucks as well.
I was just under the impression that there was not discharging of firearms in a national forrest.
thanks

After all the "jackasses" I have run across firing up on the slabs I would be more then happy to embrace folks shooting down in the WWS area if they have a good backstop.
Your question is kinda like me asking "do you really need to go through Soup Bowl or Soup Kitchen?" Your reaction to that would be kinda unsavory IMHO?
Comes down to legality not whether you think I really need to or not. Think about that next time you make a statement that deals with your personal opinion rather then my legal rights.
I target shoot up there (Eldo Nat Forest) in areas that are safe with a good back stop. But the Con has rock in many areas which is not a good back stop. Bullets will be deflected into directions you are not aware of, from the rocks. I recommend that you use other parts of the forest for target shooting.
Nutz, I think the point aggro was trying to make is very much like the point mntbronco just made. Shooting near the trail right now is just making that spotlight shine brighter. We really don't need any more controversy over the trail. But, that said, there are many places that are nearby, where shots could be heard from the trail, that are good locations.
So, the original Q was about Wentworth Springs area, a bad idea in my opinion. There is rock, private buildings, a campground and the trail. Not too far away there are areas that are better.

I guess after having ricochet in the trees on the slabs above my head between Post Pile and Ellis had me praying for a place that is kinda not on the trail. Wentworth CG and back towards the pavement cept for the mile of smile, I thought were fair game. Sorry if my tone was harsh but firearms are another privilege of ours that is being squashed. Responsible gun owners usually pay attention to the Zone. I am one of those.
On the other side of the coin I am willing to modify my behavior in the spirit of saving our trail. So I will find legal and less conspicuous locations to keep my aim intact. Note I am firing a pistol, with a good backstop I only require 50' to fire. I have always hiked away from the trail and gotten to a location that provided the area back behind me to be clear of possible stray rounds. I pick up all my brass and take my targets out with me like I would any trash. I never fire up there during the main season either. Anyway that is the facts, and that is history.
Like I said above, I am willing to change My Personal behavior for the better of the trail, I think some other people need to take that in mind about some of the ways they may abuse or mis-use the trail. Guns are not the only problem at the Rubicon Trail. Think about it!!
As far as the range comment goes........well I personally have never paid to fire my weapons. I don't think that responsible gun use is dangerous or careless. It all depends on the individual and the way they were brought up with guns. Unfortunately there are a few bad apples out there just like the bad apples on the trail. Responsible people unfortunately have to pay for the acts of people who don't give a rats patootie.
