I am thinking about heading up to the McKinney side of the Rube up to Observation Point in about 3 weeks. Has anyone been up there yet this season or is it completely snowed in still?
I'll be checking out the trailhead this Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised to see six feet of snow at the trailhead. That means more than 10-15 feet at the summit.
On Saturday the 20th or Sunday the 21st, I plan on doing a water bar repair trip up the Tahoe side. We should all do everything we can to harden the trail before Memorial Weekend.
Remember to Tread Lightly. It will be very wet for a very long time.
Yeah, I presumed there is a lot of snow because of all the talk about record snows and the late snow. But in looking at the snow cams on South Shore at lake level it is all dirt. The Truckee cameras are dirt too. But that is @ 5000 feet. I was hoping in three more weeks we would be good.
I would greatly appreciate a trail report when you return. I live five hours from Tahoe and I am trying to figure out if I should change my plans.
So, I stopped by the Tahoe side of the trail on my way to dinner yesterday. There is a six foot wall of snow at the entrance. Looking over the wall, it appears to be six feet deep as far back as I could see. I didn't hike in.
I have been told that Miller Lake is several feet over its normal level. At several points along the trail the lake has flooded the trail. I was told that there is one 1/4 mile section under water.
The FS regularly snowmobiles the trail to check its condition and patrol for snowshoers and cross county skiers. I will get in touch with them and ask how bad it is farther up.
I would strongly advise that everyone avoid the Rubicon until well after Memorial Weekend. Even after then the water levels will be very high.
Stay on the trail, don't spin your tires and drive slow through water.
Thanks for the quick report Doug. A great help. I agree, if you want to do a "snow run" (in May mind you ) there are plenty of other areas to go that will have less impact on the terrain.
We hit the McCon last year in April and the melt had pretty much done its thing but the trail (especially the corridor along Miller) was under 24"-36" of water in spots from the run off and overflow of Miller. Pretty common after the melt. There was no real snow to speak of, but lots of muddy run off water. We crossed carefully and the rest of the trail was fine.
We already did our snow run(s) this Winter. We will wait it out.
As for now 5-21 there is not a single area on the East side that has dust. Maybe we should all concider staying off the trail for a while. Just my .02.
Best Regards,
Self Righteous Prick
