I'd like to know as well. We've been told that we can park tow rigs/trailers at the Chalet parking area then drive to the trail without being ticketed. I'd like to know if the rules have changed
As far as I've heard it is the road not trail. The section of road from the Chalet to the trail is ok for Green Stickered vehicles as far as I know so you should be ok from there atleast. Again, this is just what I've heard and don't know it to be fact.
yeah it would be nice to get this all sorted out so we are all informed on what we can/can not do. Are they going to ticket on the road from the Chalet if you have equipment violations on a street registered rig but you are ok if green stickered, etc.
I just called the Pacific Ranger Station and they said it is LEGAL to park in the gravel area to the North of the Chalet and it is Legal to then drive your non-street legal vehicle to the trail on the section of paved Road between the chalet and the trail head.

There is a sign on the road, I believe it is right past the Chalet that says END OF DUAL USE VEHICLE AREA. I spoke with a ranger up there last weekend and she said that if I went past the second dam (on the way out) that I would be ticketed for no mud flaps. I told her I had a green stickered truck and had no plans to drive on the road that far anyways.
so where do the non green stickered, trailered rigs fall into? If they are not running mud flaps or have tires way out of thier fenders are they going to be ticketed on the trail? Any one have the answers to this one?

When we came out on sunday there was a sheriff sitting at the top of the spillway, right as the road puts you on top of the dam. He was backed in, in a "I'm gonna pull out and get someone" way, or at least that was my paranoid view of it He didn't bother me though, as I made my way to the chalet in my very not street legal, CA registered rig.
doubtful, a on highway reg is on highway reg no matter where you are. you had to get there, so no flaps on the dam, meant no flaps on the highway. same reason they will give you mudflap tickets out at prarie city. all you have to do is be there on the same day the officer gets bitched at by his co for not bringing in the tickets. I have off highway reg on my yota, so in between the chalet and the loon lake trail, I do not have to worry about flaps. as far as they are concerned, my street reg is non oped for the reason of no flaps. dual reg, 25 bucks every 2 years, and it sends more money to our trail and ohv system.
I'm done worrying about this stuff. I truely believe that they're looking for the idiots and not your average, wide tired/non-street legal user. After being up there this weekend and speaking directly with a few LEO's, I feel much better about the overall situation.

I know what you mean, i had a bad attitude about this stuff till the group of usfs came to my camp and hung out for a while. we chatted for a good 45 minutes.

Kudos for asking LEO directly about the issue, Mark... that's IMHO the best way to handle it. It certainly helps if you're fully legal in where you have parked and driven, but all the LEOs I have talked to have been decent fellas, and I have walked into some *interesting* situations with them and seen them acquit themselves professionally, with a sense of humor and decency.
Noodles, were you guys camped at Ellis on Friday? I would have stopped in and introduced my hippy self! :smokin:

I didn't think they allowed non-green sticker vehicles on the rubicon. I thought you had to have registration and insurance or a green sticker? Am I wrong?

thats what I meant. I am street registered, insured, but no wheres near street legal now. I would hate to see it where just because you still have street plates on your rig out on the trail and get a mud flap ticket for not having them.
I am not going to worry about it any more. I am still going to go to the trail and use it.

I was where the trails came together from loon, and from wentworth, didn't get there till saturday morning. man it was cold coming across the slabs. I have met you before. O'brien was talking about you too when we started talking about the amber lenses on the bowl when i stopped by his house the other day. I didn't go farther into the trail till sunday morning. trail was nice, evrybody was friendly. the usfs said how nice it was to never have to pick up any trash. they can't believe when people say there is a trash problem.

I stopped and chatted with the sheriffs on top of the dam on saturday, as I drove from the end of the first dam to gatekeeper with my street registered and insured rig with no windshield, no mudflaps/flares and no lights on the trailer, and they didn't have a problem with it, they just asked me how the trail looked...

this is the response i usually get from them as well. obviously my cruiser is far from legal looks wise but is current in the books and has insurance. heck not that i was smart about it but ive even turned around after putting something away in teh back with a beer in hand getting in the running rig and was asked by a shierf how things were....
Im sure you gotta be acting a fool or endangering yourself or others to get hasseled. but time will tell.
While it is too bad that this all had to happen, it does sound like it may work out and smooth out in the end. The trail and the experience may even be better for it.
I used to be an LEO and when dealing with "special enforcement" problems there were usually two ways to go. Total saturation and maximum enforcement can work in places but that does not appear to be how they are handling this, thank god. Sounds like they are maintaining a presence, catching a few of the bigger violations now and then so we all think they are doing something and letting their presence alone slowly change things.
If this all encourages (a whiner would say harass) a few yahoos to stay home and gets the rest of us to bend a little then I can't see the real harm. Note that I am only talking about us having to obey a few rules for a change, not the other land use politics going on up there.
I am sometimes foolishly optomistic but since we probably have no choice anyway I am going to look on the bright side and enjoy a cleaner and less rowdy trail. At least I hope that's what happens.
So I have a non-oped Bronco in California, Just moved to Nevada and can't get it registered, No doors, no mirrors, no bumpers. So does that mean I can't run the Rubicon? I do not have a green sticker. I plan to trailer it there? What do they do? Give you a ticket? I have run the rubicon a few times but always in my old jeep that was registered. Never thouight about it before.
i bet they would give u a ticket since it is considered a road. and the are cracking down hard right now..do u know anyone that lives in cali that u could green sticker it here? but like i said who knows if they would? only one way to find out.
you can run it, getting caught is another story. as to what they would do actually. im sure up to impounding the bronco could happen. will it? prolly better off calling the LEO's in the area to make sure...
So what is the spec on fender\mud flaps? I got pulled over before, and the officer mentioned I basically had to have coverage on the rear tire from at least half the tire up, so rocks, debris, mud, etc could not be thrown in rigs driving behind me. I rigged up some removeable mud flaps for the rear, base don what the CHP told me, so basically will this suffice? They are ugly as hell, but maybe show that I at least put some effort as far as covering the rear tires? What about front tires, etc? Pic of my ugly as sin removeable flaps:
