Ken,

Should one be a member of FOTR before signing up for CALSTAR or does this "group" offer apply to both members and non-member? Yes, I know membership in FOTR is free.

Anyone who cares about the Rubicon...is automatically a member of FOTR....if you can make it out for a work weekend....that's icing on the cake.

So go for it.....you are a member. CalStar was aware of our "membership" into FOTR requirements and was happy to see people understand the service.

I launched both the fire response and medical ship with my handheld ham radio as I was running toward the scene on Saturday. The medical ship (Calstar) was landed by the time we got the victim to Observation. Ham and Calstar. Need I say more?

No...you don't...but I still think people need to understand....from injury to leaving by CalStar was something less than 20 minutes. Ham Radios by so many people, was the shining star of the day.

I've said it before....thanks to Dennis, Barb and John...(oh and Frank of the "805") we have an insanely awesome Ham ecosystem on the Rubicon. Throw in a CalStar membership...and you know that help is on the way, and won't break your family financially.

I didn't read thru this whole thread, but realize that there are other options to "just" Calstar. If you wheel just where they service, have cell or Ham service then you are golden. If you wheel outside that then you are still at risk. Most of us do. (Moab, Colorado, Oregon, Nor & East Nevada, etc.) You will quickly learn and see that you will be out of your communication reach and their coverage. And they have no qualms about not coming to get you outside that coverage...and even on their published fringes (Black Rock desert, Gerlach, Nevada)

Our solution has been the SPOT. We have three to cover the family as we are generally separate and traveling. Their $100,000 extraction insurance is international (Baja), and about $12 per person. That insurance HAS to be initiated by a (any) SPOT tracker...which is a downside. That still does not guarantee that your area will be covered by any helo service, but their service center will certainly try, and $100k will pay for a lot of helo miles.

The $12 per person is AFTER other charges for basic, messaging, and tracking services ($150/yr) so the total can be $162 per year plus. We use those extensively, and can be used as a car finder if you visit that type of neighborhood...

This option may not be for you, and may not be perfect as it is satellite communication based, but is an option. Findmespot.com.

Edit: Here is a big Spot thread. The good, bad, etc. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282391

I've been one for years, it's cheap insurance.

After working as a FF in a rural area, and seeing how many times a month we land a med ship, I wouldn't go without it.

You guys rock!!

Before the FOTR meeting in April, we had 23 FOTR members of CalStar.

Today....we have 74! 50 new members in a few short months.

I'm pretty sure, if we get to 100....your renewal fee will be $30.

Bummer. I wonder how they go about doing that...it seems like they have many agreements.

I dunno, but even still, I consider $85 a year cheap insurance to be covered, because I've done the hour ride in a car with broken bones because I was thrown by a horse, I'd much rather be able to take the bird...

Ken, looks like we need 150 for the $30 rate...
But, already half-way there.

Thank you Dale...I knew I had seen a number around 100....but it was only briefly, because I thought there is NO WAY we could get that many...

But fortunately, I'm looking more wrong every day.

It is great to see so many people signing up for a such a great service. There are a few additional things to know about CALSTAR.

CALSTAR flies 2 Critical Care Registered Nurses on every flight. The training and expertise they bring to the scene is just amazing and the certifications they hold and maintain keep them at the very top of their field.

CALSTAR only uses twin-engine helicopters and more than half the fleet are IFR Certified (as are the pilots) which means they can safely fly in weather conditions that most helicopters do not.

Like someone else mentioned, CALSTAR will also fly you to a specialized hospital if needed. What that means is if you have a traumatic injury and go to your local hospital, they may call CALSTAR to transfer you to a trauma center that is better equipped to treat your injuries (happens all the time). For people that do not live near a trauma center, this is HUGE.

All CALSTAR helicopters are flying Intensive Care Units. The equipment is the same level you can expect to find in a hospital ICU

Many of CALSTAR's helicopters can fly 2 patients.

CALSTAR also utilizes a King Air airplane for long flights to specialty hospitals (also happens often).

CALSTAR is one of the few nonprofit air ambulances in the country.

I'm not trying push CALSTAR here or anything like that, I just want you all informed. Everyone that I know that works for CALSTAR is passionate about what they do and lives to help the community every way they can...including myself

Pretty cool video

All CALSTAR helicopters are basically flying Intensive Care Units. The equipment is the same level you can expect to find in a hospital ICU
And those 2 points...RIGHT THERE...likely saved Rachel's life.

I am signing up for the calstar membership tonight. This is a great membership and an amazing deal. I just wanted to clear up some things brought up earlier in the post. If Calstar is on another call Camino dispatch will dispatch the next closest air ambulance. This might be another Calstar helicopter, Care Flight or it could be Reach. This program only covers Calstar. There was earlier mention of calling CHP (h-20) for a free ride. This is ok if there are minor injuries or you specifically need hoisting capabilities. Otherwise I would request an air ambulance. This gives you flight nurses with a greatly expanded capabilities over the chp paramedic only helicopter. Be safe out there....
