If you go all the way thru, there is a set of closed gates at the other end. THey are usually not locked, just closed. you *might* be able to get a narrow canoe or a kayak thru the gate.

cool structure. There used to be a full toolbox there, wonder if its still there? Did you see the square of mortar with a bear print right in the middle of it?

Had to go hunt the thread down and bring it back after I found the lean-to, that's all.

Toolbox is still there...wooden, homemade, with hinges, a handle, and a lock (unlocked). Didn't see the bear print in the concrete, but that's way cool! I'll have to look next time I'm by there.

Figures you had already seen this place

I just heard from someone at the Forest that the dam at Spider was done by the army corps, and they have the original permit. I'm gonna get a copy of it. Wonder if the ditch and the work done at the corner of the lake by "Pirate Camp" were done at the same time?

I was wondering the same thing. I noticed that small rock wall at the point of the lake before. Was it done to raise the lake elevation, so too spill towards the ditch? Or just as part of the dam project, arethey both related?

Who's ever noticed the rocks with drill marks in them along the trail?

I don't know for sure, Mike, but that's my theory too...raise the lake with the dam, build that little wall and bring the water out of the lake toward the ditch, then pump it up to the ditch to send it to Loon. Make sense if you own the water rights to both and are trying to capture the water from Spider and move it to Loon.

Especially just uphill of Walker.

Just past that wall is a small "ditch" heading off to the North and West. Definitely these two were done in a close timeframe. I will look forward to seeing the original. Well, a copy anyways.

You could be right...maybe a raised waterway on a trestle or something of the like?

I thought that would be tougher than that! You got it!
Pretty cool to walk down and have lunch sitting on one of those HUGE stumps to think of the forest that preceded the SMUD work in the 1960s.

Before SMUD, Loon Lake was owned by the Georgetown Water Company, The Loon Lake Water & Power Company and the California Water Company in that order. Pretty much all of their stuff came off Gerle Creek. That was back in the olden dayz when us GDL's drank ditch water.

I was up there a couple weeks ago and the cable was knocked off the iron spike side when a tree fell on the cable. this is the pic from 2005 I took. I did not take a picture this year.
