Dennis never met a stranger and he had a wonderful ability to make a person feel like you’d known each other for years. He was a man who inspired, motivated and gently pushed us all to be their best no matter what the circumstances.
There was always a special light that surrounded Dennis and it beamed through him to all who were near. He will be sorely missed but dutifully remembered in a special place in all of our hearts. Through him the Rubicon will always have a presence and all of us will feel it when we’re out there continuing the work that Dennis loved to do and look forward to every year. His enthusiasm and love for the trail and the greatness that it holds for bringing people together for a common good will live on through us as well. We won’t let him down. Dennis was a peacemaker with a patient demeanor and in many circumstances his easy going ways and non pretentious actions showed many of us how to be better humans. He truly had a gift and had the heart and graciousness to share it with us all. RIP Dennis Mayer and we’ll see you on the other side. |

I can't stay away either... I was at the VLLS training this weekend and it is a bitter sweet experience for me at this point.
Rest assured, Dennis' last memories were of participating in a great event training future leaders, something we all know brought him great happiness. Whooping it up by a fire with an awesome group of people and close friends, being initiated as a Rubicon Rockhead and riding in his Jeep with Randy... if we could all be so lucky.

I will miss him
I worked with him on several projects and hauled cement blocks up to Loon lake for the repeater house.
He loved that project and made it happen. He was so proud of everyones effort but he was the the one that did it. He made it happen. What a great guy. He never let his body that was failing keep him from achieving his goals. He transcended that part and was an inspiration to everyone one he came in contact with. He will be missed. |

I was fortunate enough to meet Dennis on a few different AJC trips on the trail, such a great guy. He will be missed.

The last time I saw Dennis was at Cantina this year. Friday before the event began I was selling raffle tix to anyone coming in that wanted to buy them. I was a little bummed because Aaron had gone off to take a few vendors for a drive. I was hoping to get a little wheelin in before the big event the next day. Dennis came walking over and sat down, I couldn't help but be in a better mood just because he walked over with that smile and offered to help. There were a few of us sitting around drinkin a few beers and talkin. We started coming up with ideas of what we could improve on and what could be done differently next year. He was sitting by the trash bag so people were handing him their beer cans to put in the bag, he kept putting the beer cans in the bag we were putting the tickets in. We came up with some great ideas that day while raising so money for the trail. That night we had a great time at Robbs. I couldn't believe how over whelmed Dennis was when he and Doug left Sunday night. He was like a kid in a candy store when he found out how much money we raise this year. He was grinning from ear to ear and just kept saying thank you to me and Reanna like we had done it all on our own. The workings of the Cantina were amazing to him, Dennis loved that the event has raised so much for a cause that he believed so strongly in.

Remember Sunday night when we were getting prizes situated and we could not find his friend's prizes or card for anything. Then I realized it was next to us in the camper the entire time. LOL We told Dennis and he just laughed saying that that was something he would do and we were too young to do stuff like that.

That was a great time. I'm so glad we all spent so much time together. I'm really no good at this, so I'm going to make it short. A large part of my friendship with Dennis was all about hugs. He told me one of the few perks of getting older was that he could play "dirty old man" and ask for hugs (and a new one each day) without anyone minding. I never minded, he got many, many hugs and so did I, I so miss those hugs.

Dennis, we're gonna miss you. I don't even know how to react. It's amazing how you can have just met someone, but they make you feel like a long time friend. How can someone have such an influence on you in such a short period of time. My best wishes to the family of a great man. And as "the speech" goes, who didn't get the speech. I almost felt guilty when I had to tell him I couldn't make VLLS this year. Everything from chainsaw, to HAMM, if you expressed an interest in a particular area, he figured out how to make you want to get a cert and help out.

I was fortunate enough to get to work with Dennis on a few trail projects.
The world, the trail, and a whole lot of people are better off because of Dennis. Regards, ....Mike
