Memorial Day 1977
This is pretty cool. One of Dave's albums contains a complete trip from Wentworth to Tahoe during the Memorial day weekend of 1977.
Jimmy Carter was president and such hits playing on the radio as, "Don't leave me this way" Thelma Houston, "You and me" Alice cooper, and the everlasting sounds of Abba abound the billboard charts ![]() "Rocky" was the hot movie along with it's famous soundtrack. Anyway the pictures are wonderful to look at and get an idea of how the trail has changed and in many ways not changed over the past thirty two years. ahhh-the good old days tim! the guy on the back of the flatty was don burkhardt-he was the guy that organized our memorial day expedition and was lead rig on our trip. his motto was "don't follow don unless you want to get stuck"
he was a good friend of mine and we wheeled many trails in this state together along with john his future brother in law who is holding the winch hook in the pic he rode shotgun with don on that trip. we had exited ice house road and were on the trail to wentworth springs if i remember correctly. don drove a old skool 46 flatty with a 198" v6- t90 3 speed-5.38 gears and a warn overdrive so you could cruise the freeways and get gas milage. at the time-open diffs front and rear!!!!!. 32" inch tires + open diffs = disaster in a long deep water hole like that one. but don was a expert at picking good lines in the rocks! i ran powerlocks front and rear and had a hard time keeping up with him. forgot to mention none of us on that trip had power steering-probably didn't need it-we ran 30"-32" diameter tires back then! i believe it took us 6 hours from turn off of ice house road-wentworth springs road to get to spider lake. all of our group was covered in mud! spent the next day wheeling down to rubicon springs and the next day driving up cadalliac and then driving 200 miles home. joe was in our group-stock 46 jeep with a flathead 4 cylinder-5.38's and a warn overdrive 200 miles home at 30-50 m.p.h.! nobody ran tow rigs or trailers back then.yes things have changed a lot in 32 years from a tech standpoint- but people in 4-wheeling have not changed that much-lots of good people out on our trails enjoying the out doors - i hope it continues to be a tradition for many years to come. thanks again tim for all the effort you have put into this progect.

I didn't realize that Stainless Steal Dave was such a celebrity!
Dave, I met you last year on Barrett Lake trail. We were a group of Air Force guys from Travis AFB. We had a grey XJ with us that broke a front track bar. ...anyway, you probably don't remember us, but we all talked about how cool you and your group was. Would love to run into you again out on the trails! Great pictures by the way. One of my favorite things about the trail is it's vast history and all the people that have enjoyed it. |

hey Dave, I met you at the trail head this past summer.
Since you have been traveling the trail for some time now. Do you happen to remember my dad, Roy Prindle? From the Bay Area. He Ran the Jamboree From the 60s to the 80s.... White and gold cj5, Belmont Buster jeep club.... Hope to see you on the trail soon. Cheers. |
