Ok, here's the real reason I got motivated to figure out how my printer works as a scanner. I saw this image last night, and just couldn't help but wonder if I'd ever captured any of those trees and rocks in my old images from almost 40 years ago (holy tree rings Batman!) now.
Looking for a smaller version of that tree in the middle of the image?

I realized that they were from different angles at least, and possibly completely different spots, but looking at the B&W shot took me way back instantly and I just had to share some of my own.
Truth be told, those images have never been far from my mind since they were first burned into memory those years ago. Such great memories of friends sharing an adventure.
Good stuff for families and friends for sure. Just another "first time" kind of thing...

Some bits of the trail have changed massively in that time. Other spots not at all.
For those that have gone many years in-between trips over the trails, it's a strange and wonderful feeling to be wheeling along, not recognizing aything, then popping over a rock and all of a sudden being transported back because you see something so familiar that it's eerie.
Eerie in a good kind of way that is.

Looks cold!

Amazing how different everything looks under a couple of feet of snow. You'd think you were driving over a meadow instead of boulders.

Good pics. Looks like fun until you get stuck.
Did everyone make it back without incident? Or were there where some yanking and digging were necessary?

It was nice powder on top of hard pack so it was pretty easy driving. It would pack up over the hood....stop, back up and blast thru and cruise again.

Worst part was that it was just absolutely freezing cold

...But fun, right?

My first trip (the pic of the tin-roof building) was Memorial Day Weekend. Hit the trail and got up to the first spot where you can look to your right and just see the top of the Loon Lake dam. (one of the other's pics shows almost the exact spot)
It was about 85 degrees out, we were in t-shirts and shorts (homemade cut-off Levi's back then) and as soon as we got into the trees the temp dropped about 25 degrees and we hit a snow bank. Literally a wall of snow that stopped us dead in our tracks.

So we made lemonade out of the lemons, pulled up to a big flat rock, got out the camp stove and frisbees, pulled the bookshelf speakers out on their 25' wires, built a fire and had a blast!
And don't even ask for the music list! Mark had quite the eclectic collection of cassette tapes.

Great weekend, even if we didn't make it very far on the trail.
Keep those pics coming...

New Mile marker

Some how...

Tie rod about bent into the fan (may not have been above rock... noticed it way down the trail)

So a little trail fixing

Mustache tape fixes everything...

Broken Shock Mount...

Trail kicked my butt this time...

But I'll see this again soon...

Great pics! In cases like these, I look at broken parts and trail-fixes as just more family/friend bonding time in the great outdoors.

These pics make me want to take my new to me stock 83 CJ-7 on 31s for a try at the trail. Might be fun?

Absolutely! As long as you don't mind going slow, getting very technical, have someone along that's a good spotter or you're expert at guiding yourself over the rocks and don't mind going around now and then.
Along with the occasional scratch too of course!
If you've been on the trail. You know all that already.

It's all good.

Of course, I say that, but with a "stock" '83, you've got things like differential gearing, rear axle flanges, steering gear boxes, frame rails, shackles, steering linkage, clutch linkage, and other things to at least think about. And take care of.
The 31's will take it much easier on those components, but will limit your ground clearance.
Larger tires are better up to a point, but put more stress on the previously mentioned areas.

You up for some fun though? Go for it.
Maybe plan to stay at Loon and just play around to get a feel for the trail and your new Jeep

Yeah, I don't even know what gears are in it yet I took my YJ through when it was just stock axles sprung over on 33s with open 4.10s and it was not super challenging. With the WB length, probably terrible gearing, and lack of ground clearance, it could prove to be a very fun and technically challenging day I may have to give it a go once it gets the maintenance once-over.
