Coulda been worse.

I am going to take the high road here and file this under "Could have been worse".

The storms that have been causing all the tornados in Oklahoma just hit here. This tree is rotten on the inside but didn't show it from the out. Basically the outside 2 inches were alive and the center dead.

Ten feet left and my jeep woulda been crushed

Broke the end off the truss, 2 2x4's and 2 sheets of metal. I am not sure if I will replace the metal. Depends on how straight I can get it.

BTW, This all happened less than 20 minutes ago.

pretty much just got to laugh at it... as soon as we finished our house in 06 a storm rolled in with high winds and took a huge branch off a tree out front on the house and like you clipped the side of our porch and nipped the garage. it only did $1200 damage in gutters some trim work and re painting everything that got banged up. it could have been much worse.

just sucks to take a few steps backwards after making good progress....
you and these trusses just dont seem to be having a good relationship so far

That really sucks man. I had a spruce tree break off in a wind storm once and land on my Car.

Your right it could have done more damage.

Glad to see you're taking it well. As I say, you can laugh or cry about adversity, and crying only gets your face wet, causing more work (drying your mug).
I haven't commented on the build before but I've been watching this build and think it's a well thought-out build done with a reasonable budget.
I love these "build what you can with what you've got" type builds

Well you just answered one question for me, I've got large 2 trees close to my shop pad area that I'm going to have to remove in the next year or 2 and I've been toying with the idea of just building the shop then taking the trees out once they're completely "dead". Time to clean up the chainsaw.

Rather than try to straighten the steel how about replacing just the bottom 2' or so of the steel. Cut off the bent up stuff, slide a new short sheet under it and screw it down!

Yeah, I got to the point in my build where I had 7 tons of gravel delivered and moved it around with a shovel and wheelbarrow. The next week I started looking for a used Bobcat...

So I am putting a 14 foot lean too off the side of the shop. I need a place to store my redneck crawler hauler. Here is a pick of my wife running the tractor leveling off the dirt on the side of the shop

I gotta say again, I am so blessed. I got a wife that will work her a** off, run a tractor, swing a hammer, set a post, loves 4x4's and will still clean up like a supermodel anytime she wants too. I couldn't be happier!!!

Looks like you have an excuse to build a bolt-on toothbar for your loader.

Just sat and read the whole thread after looking around for ideas for my own (future) shop. I like that you are doing this yourselves, the same way I'd like to. Looks great so far, and gives me lots of pointers for either re-building an existing barn or a shop next to the barn.

Very small update. We got all of the dirt removed for the lean-to and got about half the rock retaining wall done. I also made a rock wall on the lower side of the shop drive but didn't get any pictures of it.

Anyway, slowly but surely I am making progress. My wife and i are both school teachers and summer vacation starts in 3 weeks. I hope to ramp it up then!

This is how the weekend started. 2 pork butts and my wife's own special rub.

and here is the rock retaining wall. The interwbz said to slpe it back 9 degrees. This slopes back around 15 degrees. I think it will hold. But if not we will deal with it!

Okay here is a long overdue update!

One of the things we really battle here on our 11 acres is rocks. AND I mean A LOT of ROCKS! So we are trying to find things to do with them. To the pics.

Here I am placing a rock on the retaning wall we built. Man I love having a tractor. A whole world of possibilities has been opend up!

Name: IMG_20120513_111617.jpg
Views: 956
Size: 125.2 KB

Another building our wall

Name: IMG_20120513_111636.jpg
Views: 952
Size: 125.1 KB

Here you can see I had 2 loads of shale brought in for my road and pad. I have all these boulders on the property so I lined the downhill side with them. It'll help with run off. Funny thing is the local Atwoods has rock like these sitting on pallets and selling them for $100 plus. I am sitting on $10K easy!

You can also see to the left where we been clearing brush and briars. and to the right you can see all the smaller stones we are using for another rock wall

Name: IMG_20120608_193605.jpg
Views: 962
Size: 90.9 KB

And here is a pic of the finished retaining wall.

Name: IMG_20120607_103020.jpg
Views: 956
Size: 113.9 KB

And did I mention alot of rocks? On the other side of the property we have a big ravine. I am slowly building my own personal rock graden to wheel!

Okay so my redneck camper/trailer has shown up in this thread before. Its a Palomino Colt pop-up camper I mounted to the front of a 22 foot goose neck. My jeep snugs up right behind it. It has a small leak and it really needs to be out of the weather. BUT I had no desire for that thing to take up 1/3 of my shop space. Nor did I want to have to move it everytime I worked on something

So I decided to build a lean-to off the side of the shop. This is the reason for the dirt work and retaing wall.

Lean-to in progress

Name: IMG_20120608_154216.jpg
Views: 948
Size: 119.5 KB

Those are 18 foot 2x8's spaced 5 feet apart. I hope they do not sag!

Name: IMG_20120608_154232.jpg
Views: 961
Size: 108.6 KB

I have them setting on a 2x6 on the retaining wall side and in header hanger(thats what we call em!) on the shop side

Name: IMG_20120608_154312.jpg
Views: 951
Size: 121.9 KB

Just like the shop roof, for purlions I went 2x4's on 24 inch centers

Name: IMG_20120608_181849.jpg
Views: 954
Size: 117.8 KB

And then a wide shot from back by the house. The shop roof is a 6/12 pitch. I halfed that, per the PBB suggestions, and went with a 3/12 pitch. I think it turned out great!

Name: IMG_20120608_183618.jpg
Views: 951
Size: 147.4 KB

Thats where I am at currently. Saving money for lean-to metal and concrete.

As the shop sits to date I have right at $4000 Total.

envious of all the nice reasonably square rocks you have for retaining wall building... those would cost a mint around here..
Nice tractor too... one day I will have a little Kubota like it..sure must save your back!

I am not kidding when I say that the rocks pictured do not represent 10% of the boulders on our property.

You pay shipping and we will split the profits!!!
