Air Compressor Rebuilding??
bought a Craftsman pro 240v 60 gallon air compressor a few years ago and it seems that it is dying.
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00916561000 It does get heavy use on the weekends, and now takes a super long time to fill up(Several painful minutes). Cleaned out the air filter, drained the water, but there is nothing else to maintain on it (oiless design). anyone ever pull one apart and know what would need to be fixed? (seals, rings, etc...) now im stuck w/ running a hose off my bro's CAT service truck, across the yard and rigging it to the plasma and all the air tools.

VERY easy to rebuild and suprisingly inexpensive. I have the Craftsman 6HP/60gal oilless just like that and just rebuilt mine for under $50. Had mine for over 7 years, can't believe it lasted that long so I can't justify buying a new one yet. You can find the parts you need online at Sears.com of course and just order them direct. Pretty much what you'll need are cylinder sleeves, self-lubricating piston rings and any o-rings above the cylinders (should be 2 on each). A nice suprise was the new cylinder sleeves I received were an upgrade from the originals. Originals were aluminum, pretty thin. New ones were steel that was hard chrome plated and longer too.

Seems to be the same one I have. (cept mine is red)
It now takes forever to fill and seems overly noisy (even for an airless) How did the rebuild go??

Although maybe it is depending on how bad it needs to be rebuilt

instead of rebuilding a POS oiless compressor why don't you mount one of these
if the 6hp motor truly is 6hp (I HIGHLY doubt it is anywhere near) then you could fab something up to use it or pickup a new 5hp 1phase motor. It will certainly cost more & be more difficult than a rebuild but you would have a a kick ass industrial compressor that would be extremely quiet. I think I might try this on my POS 35 gal craftsman, noisy & slow as hell oiless compressor. other than it being pretty top heavy, any thoughts? |

I have that same pump in a v-twin configuration on my compressor. It's quiet like they say and has run for about 8 years so far with no trouble. I put one of the HF auto drains on it and have basically ignored it. It's definitely an upgrade from an oilless.

I just acquired a freebie old dresser/wayne 230v 3 pase compressor from the gas station I tow for. Its huge, 200 gallon tank monster motor and head. I can't find anything on the net even basic, about rebiulding old compressors! Maybe I dunno how to search very well, do you guys have any advise?

Eaton make awesome pumps- I bought a 10hp vertical 120gal compressor from them about five years ago. I sold it when I sold my business. I just ordered another one. That guy knows his business, and is really cool to work with.
