Just a reminder about wedding rings and welding...

Not only does the wife get pissed you are ruining it by adding on weld boogers, that gold conducts heat WAY fast...

I do it all day. try not welding bare handed or in those "cool" mechanix gloves like all the jackoffs on tv. the weld spatter doesn't stick to my ring very well, I just chip it off and re-polish the titanium and it's good as new.

It was the typical story - I was *just* gonna tack some tube in place, then grab all the gear for the full on welding... Isn't that how it always happens?

And yeah - Mechanix gloves are useless for welding.

I just wanted to post these to show what *can* happen when you think you can just tack a few beads before grabbing the gear... You get burned

Just pop the fawker and get back to work.

My two cents: Take the fawker off whenever you are in a shop environment. I've seen way too many screwed up fingers in my short time. Burning flesh is a distinct smell. A smell you never forget. It only takes a second to weld a hot wire, or the positive post of the battery , to any ground using your ring.

Mechanix gloves have their place. They work great under a pair of leather gloves, I'm able to weld quite a bit longer with both pairs of gloves than I am with only the leathers (they've caught on fire a few times now). And they have also saved my hands from the angle grinder more times than I can count and picking up hot tube or working on a hot engine. Wear a pair for a while then don't, you'll see. Don't be all pissy cause theyre on tv and you aren't either.

It isn't that nasty, and it is little... But like FYRMAN pointed out, it could have been MUCH worse, so I got lucky. Been married 5 years now, and this spring was the first time I have really had a problem with it... now the ring has some ugly scars on it (and the wife is NOT happy about that ) and been burned twice now.

To give you an idea - the booger that landed on the ring was about the size of the ball on the end of aball point pen. That small piece heated the gold up so fast, it made a burn the size of the end of 2 pencil erasers. I could only imagine if something bigger landed on there - I would have a blister around the entire finger before I could even realize it was burning.

Again - the point of the post is to go ahead and take it off before you head out to the shop. Next time, I/you may not be so lucky to just walk out with a teeny little burn...

I stopped wearing mine. Pisses the wife off... but I'm tired of taking it on and off while I'm working.

The only time I wear it now is if we are going out (dinner, wedding, etc)

Gold is an excellent metal. It's pretty, it's expensive, it's conducts heat and electricty very well, and has a relativly low melting point. I used to work with a guy that had to have his ring surgically removed after it melted into his finger. To remove it, they cut his dead finger off, slid the ring away from the bone, after they peeled the cooked flesh away from it.

There are too many stories like this one to ignore.

i want to get a Ti ring when i get married, would it be much better? of course it's much harder, but the melting point is much higher too, right? and does it conduct heat/electricity well?

some jackass at work just went to hospital to get his 'mechanix' gloves removed. seems you can get them hot enough and melt them to your flesh....when i weld mig at work i just use a pair of work gloves, but when stick welding or dualshield, its always a pair of real 'welding' gloves...

first off, keep your hands away from the arc and your leather gloves won't catch on fire, seems to work for me, and I find myself welding 6-8 hours a day, 6 days a week. are you using leather work gloves or insulated welding gloves? if you've welded enough, or worn those mechanix gloves enough you will come to find out they melt. I'm not one for liking melting plastic to be wrapped around my hands. if you are working in a shop environment you should check shit before you pick it up or before you touch it, that's what's going to save you from getting burnt, not a thin pair of gloves with plastic cladding. you are right, they do have their place, but that place is not protection from heat/sparks/fire.

drm - i understand you post your trying to help spare someone some pain and everyone is a big tough guy... Seeing all the pbb injuries has definilty helped me. I now wear eye glass consitantly and even hearing protection.

and...
Titanium rings are the WORST ring you can wear for the stuff we all do...They are difficult to cut off in an emergency situation. A gold ring is comparibley easier to cut of with minimal effort. Plus gold can be reworked a lot easier if it does get messed up...

just somthing else to think about....

Weld splatter can also cruise through a quartz face on a watch real fast like.

Same deal, tack and quick weld latch on gate. I broke it on the way out to go to work. Decided not to wire it closed, and could get it done quick. So there I am in a Suit, Tie, Helmet, mig cart & stinger in hand at 7am or so. Took one little booger due to hitting a chunk of paint. Landed right on my watch face. Killed the watch! And lets just say it's not the kind you pick up at WallyWorld.

Hindsite 20/20 stupid, stupid, stupid. Hell I could have ruined a suit. Thats what I get for not liking to leave things broke, after I've broke them.

DRM sorry you got hurt, suck it up, before someone mails you some tampons!

My ring is coverd in boogers, I have to keep turning it since it cuts against my fingers. Too scared to grind em out and too cheap to pay to have it done

Burned my ring finger to the bone 3/4 of the way around on the two top post of my Blue top Optima.

This will only take a second and ..................why is my ring so hot ? I have two spots on my ring, power in and power out.
