anyone ever rent spool guns?

Title says it all. I am looking to get one eventially, but want to try it out. My vendors will let me try at the store, but I want to build something first to see if it is worth it.

Old Scout, do you weld aluminum with that spool-gun?

If so, I'd be interested on your thoughts on the setup. I have a 255 and have been considering adding a spool-gun... Just don't know what all that will get me...

Yup I use it for aluminum. I have built a few things with it and will be using it to build an 19' aluminum boat trailer next year. The only down sides are, Aluminum takes a ton more prep than steel and the 1lb spools and small bottles of argon kind of get expensive. It was a freebe from Miller when they introduced the 210.

I rented one before I bought my setup. It was a Miller and it worked pretty good. The only problem is that it is kind of bulky.

After renting the spool gun, I went for a kick ass push pull system from Lincoln. My machine is a 350amp and you need all the heat you can get if you are going to do aluminum.

How many amps is your machine?

If you want a really good spool gun that is also a trail welder get a READY WELDER! It is amazing that most people with migs dont realize how easy it is to just set up a RW to their machines. It is in fact so simple you dont have to have any kind of "add on box". Just connect your leads as if you were hooking to battery power in the appropriate polarity and VIOLA a spoolgun on your mig machine!
The ready welder has a built in gas solenoid already , and also comes with the gas hose & fittings etc.
You still have all adjustability of the voltage at the mig machine PLUS since the wire speed wheel is right next to your thumb it is cake to set yourself up with out having burnback situations. Also I should note that this works just as good as ANY spool gun set up out there on a normal short circut mig machine (ie non pulse inverter based (GMAW-P)) which no one here is talking about anyhow..
Add that to the fact you can then put it all back in its case , and take it to the trail.
Richard

I have been thinking about the RW for a while. Does it work ok with a DC stick welder? Seems like it should if it can run off batteries... I am a bit confused though, cuz a normal spool gun needs to sense the arc voltage to vary the wire speed if running off a Constant Current source.
